98 civic wouldnt start.. anyone?

hey whats up, i seem to be having electrical problems with my car anyone that might be able to give me some advise on what to check?

Ok i started the car then it cut off after 2 mins... so thinking that i remote started it earlier i started it again... then it ran for 3 seconds and shut off again (both of these time the engine sounded normal).. on the 3rd time the sound of it turinng over started becoming fast and high pitch,,

i checked the distributor for spark notting... i replace it with another 1 and still no spark...

now can it be a fuse?

or anything else what else should i check?

imported_xplizitremix 12-Jan-2007 03:20 AM

try ur grounds could be loose
Fuel pump cut off?

not the best at electrical but grounds are very important

imported_Cablerat 12-Jan-2007 08:36 AM

Was the remote starter installed recently?

Does it start and keep running if you start it with the remote starter?

I had a seen a couple of alarm install jobs where the ignition connections on the remote starter were total ass and were causing the car to turn off.

imported_slowandfurious 12-Jan-2007 09:26 AM

car wouldnt start if dist. is not working. maybe its a combo of things thats going on to cause your problrem. are the sparkplug wires good? any cel on the dash? could be the car starter does it have a alarm as well? Cablerat could be right, wiring from a install could be the problem if its recent. Hows the voltage on the battery

"on the 3rd time the sound of it turinng over started becoming fast and high pitch,,"

can you explain abit more

bbarbulo 12-Jan-2007 01:20 PM

ok your description of the cranking on the 3rd time being fast and high pitch worries me a lil bit. either the started motor disengaged and you heard the motor alone, or your timing belt has snapped.

does it continue to crank with this wierd noise... like it doesn't sound normal?

I suppose it could also be your ignition switch, my daily driver did the same, it would start and as soon as I let go of the key it would shut off... it was my ignition switch.

chris_si98 12-Jan-2007 02:10 PM

^^ i also thought it could be the ignition switch. I even looked it up on shopkey how to properly diagnosis it. lol

bbarbulo 12-Jan-2007 04:01 PM

i diagnosed mine by holding onto the key LOL

imported_PRoCiVic 12-Jan-2007 06:29 PM

ok sounds like we're getting some where..

first the alarm was installed about 1 year ago, so no new installs. .

second the distrubitor is not giving any spark before or after the spark plug wires... so anyone know what can be respnosible for the distrubitor?

the engine.. dosent sound like it usually does when u crank it... kind of like if its just turning with no chance of it picking up... it sounds a bit faster

Bryce 12-Jan-2007 07:37 PM

Your throwing no codes?

Bryce 12-Jan-2007 07:55 PM

Now i know you PM'ed me this but i figured it would be better posted in here more feed back the better.

actually its giving two codes...

Evaporative Emission Control System leak detected in the fuel tank area

Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold malfunctioning or defective catalyst system

hey do 98 civics have coils? cause for some reason there is no spark at all and i changed the distrubitor?

You dont have coils thats forsure. But ive never dealt with those CEL Codes so hopefully you will get a reply here.

check to make sure you timing belt hasn't snapped. once you establish that, try to borrow a buddy's distributor. if that helps, then go get a new dizzy.

imported_PRoCiVic 13-Jan-2007 01:23 PM

the timing belt hasn't snapped... i already tried swapping with another distributor.. still notting... if the timing is out the distributor should still spark rite?

is there any realys that can be the problem for this?

bbarbulo 13-Jan-2007 03:39 PM

yeah if the timing is wrong you would still spark.

spark signal comes internally from the distributor, goes to the ECU for processing, then goes back to the distributor for amplification, then to the wires and finally the sparkplugs.

no, there are no relays that control spark, no relay in the world could possibly operate fast enough to transfer spark energy.

did you swap the complete distributor including rotor and cap, or did you reuse your old cap? cuz the cap might be so toast that it doesn't transfer spark anymore.

besides that, time to try out a new ECU. but before you do that, make sure the ECU is in fact getting power... as in check the ECU fuses. :shrugs:

imported_PRoCiVic 13-Jan-2007 05:00 PM

thank you for u help it turns out the problem is bigger than i expected...

the timing belt jumped a couple of notches... and the valves are bent so the engine is turining over but the camshaft is seized only the cam gear is turning...

thats why no spark... and the high pitch sound... thank u all

bbarbulo 13-Jan-2007 05:07 PM

so you broke your camshaft. I've seen it happen. when you said it doesn't sound right turning over, this is what I was afraid of.

go ahead and buy that head that chris has. 130K kms, and he's got the complete head and everything. could be back on the road like mid next week (cuz you still gotta buy a headgasket, timing belt, wp, and head studs)

bbarbulo 13-Jan-2007 05:08 PM

i need to know.... be honest here... what did you do to break the camshaft?

chris_si98 13-Jan-2007 06:02 PM

^^ im with bruno

buy my head:D

imported_PRoCiVic 13-Jan-2007 06:34 PM

actually im about to do an entire swap the tranny is giving problems...

i dont know how the camshaft broke i drove from toronto to hamiliton and i stoped at a gas station for 5 mins.. then started the car drove 10 more mins and parked 2 hours later i came outside started the car it ran for 2 mins and shut offf then i started it agin it ran for 30 seconds and shut off all this time it was still parked i didnt rev or anything... i think the timing belt jumped a nnotch or the sam seized somehow which is first i dont know because it shutdown like if i ran out of gas..
