98 civic wouldnt start.. anyone?

hey whats up, i seem to be having electrical problems with my car anyone that might be able to give me some advise on what to check?

Ok i started the car then it cut off after 2 mins... so thinking that i remote started it earlier i started it again... then it ran for 3 seconds and shut off again (both of these time the engine sounded normal).. on the 3rd time the sound of it turinng over started becoming fast and high pitch,,

i checked the distributor for spark notting... i replace it with another 1 and still no spark...

now can it be a fuse?

or anything else what else should i check?

Was the remote starter installed recently?

Does it start and keep running if you start it with the remote starter?

I had a seen a couple of alarm install jobs where the ignition connections on the remote starter were total *** and were causing the car to turn off.

car wouldnt start if dist. is not working. maybe its a combo of things thats going on to cause your problrem. are the sparkplug wires good? any cel on the dash? could be the car starter does it have a alarm as well? Cablerat could be right, wiring from a install could be the problem if its recent. Hows the voltage on the battery

"on the 3rd time the sound of it turinng over started becoming fast and high pitch,,"

can you explain abit more

ok your description of the cranking on the 3rd time being fast and high pitch worries me a lil bit. either the started motor disengaged and you heard the motor alone, or your timing belt has snapped.

does it continue to crank with this wierd noise... like it doesn't sound normal?

I suppose it could also be your ignition switch, my daily driver did the same, it would start and as soon as I let go of the key it would shut off... it was my ignition switch.

ok sounds like we're getting some where..

first the alarm was installed about 1 year ago, so no new installs. .

second the distrubitor is not giving any spark before or after the spark plug wires... so anyone know what can be respnosible for the distrubitor?

the engine.. dosent sound like it usually does when u crank it... kind of like if its just turning with no chance of it picking up... it sounds a bit faster

Now i know you PM'ed me this but i figured it would be better posted in here more feed back the better.

actually its giving two codes...

Evaporative Emission Control System leak detected in the fuel tank area

Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold malfunctioning or defective catalyst system

hey do 98 civics have coils? cause for some reason there is no spark at all and i changed the distrubitor?

You dont have coils thats forsure. But ive never dealt with those CEL Codes so hopefully you will get a reply here.

check to make sure you timing belt hasn't snapped. once you establish that, try to borrow a buddy's distributor. if that helps, then go get a new dizzy.

yeah if the timing is wrong you would still spark.

spark signal comes internally from the distributor, goes to the ECU for processing, then goes back to the distributor for amplification, then to the wires and finally the sparkplugs.

no, there are no relays that control spark, no relay in the world could possibly operate fast enough to transfer spark energy.

did you swap the complete distributor including rotor and cap, or did you reuse your old cap? cuz the cap might be so toast that it doesn't transfer spark anymore.

besides that, time to try out a new ECU. but before you do that, make sure the ECU is in fact getting power... as in check the ECU fuses.

so you broke your camshaft. I've seen it happen. when you said it doesn't sound right turning over, this is what I was afraid of.

go ahead and buy that head that chris has. 130K kms, and he's got the complete head and everything. could be back on the road like mid next week (cuz you still gotta buy a headgasket, timing belt, wp, and head studs)
