helllll no! not for a daily driven car anyways. If it has bearing problems or something out of the ordinary, then maybe, but if the car runs okay then HELL NO!

the 20 in 20W40 represents the temp range where the oil can maintain viscosity of 40 weight. the last number is viscosity index... so 20 is thiner than 30, 30 is thinner than 40, 40 is thinner than 50, etc.

So 20W40 is thinner than 5W50 but only over a very limited range of temperature. Outside of the range, the viscosity is not guaranteed and the oil can turn into honey.

5W50 is thicker, but can maintain a constant viscosity at a lower temp range.

At least that's what a mobil rep told me when I was purchasing 5W40 for my dad's hard-running diesel.

Bruno .. but what about the upper temperature limit? oil breaks down if it gets too hot ... is there any info in those magical numbers that determines which ones have a higher temperature range ... ?

not from the 5W30 type designation... the upper range is in the service number of the item, like SJ6 or CF4 etc... that indicates what type of engine the oil is designed for. Like the SJ indicates a gasoline engine service, and the last number is the latest update to that standard. CF4 is for diesel and turbo diesel engines.

Our cars need SJx designation. Oh, and it's not specified anywhere but in gov't tests or whatever organization deals out those certifications. You know the ones... it's like a star label?

5W30 all year round professor

Honda never even mentioned 10W30 in the recommendation manual. If you want, you can go to a 0W30 oil with no change in protection or performance.

If you are really, really hard on the car, like say *cough*gatherer at and auto-x event *cough* I'd run 5W40 just for the duration of the event, and return to 5W30 for the rest of the time.

LMAO

actually the car gets 5w30 Mobil 1 synthetic. and the oil get changed every 3000 KM's actually with it just being a "pleasure" car now and not transporting me to and from work should I change the oil more often now that it's life has changed?

I see it this way:

this past summer the amount of time it was being beaten on was a same percentage of the overall drive time. (around 1 to 5 % at most)

for this next summer the amount of time it's being beaten on is increasing due to only driving to wednesday meets and autoX events.... so now the beat on percent is up around 20 to 30 % of the total time the engine is running...

should I change the oil more frequenly?

I would honestly run fresh oil at every event but in the 40 weight, like 5W40. the cost is somewhat prohibitive, so maybe you want to run 15W40?

5W40 Mobil Delvac is $132 for 4 jugs of 4 liters if I recall correctly.
