I have one of these kits.

The kit is made of EMUSA parts. I was a complete FI rookie when I went after this because a few people on here said it seemed pretty good.

The BOV was DOA. I thought it was working but it was actually compressor surge. Frank didn't tell me that. Zeeman informed me of this big problem and even got me a good price on a Greddy RZ replacment.

The Wastegate could be better aswell. It spins around if you try and spin it. Zeeman also informed me of this.

The charge piping is ribbed at the end, which is nice for keeping it on the couplers. But the piping s pretty thin according to the guy who did some welding for me. You'll have to buy a OBD1 IAT sensor and flange and have that welded on aswell. Mine was left disconnected with no IAT sensor in it. CEL anyone?!

The intercooler fins bend easily, but it gets the job done.

The oil lines are good, but I had to run my own setup of the back of the block as Franks kit was installed right on the back of the block.

The turbo seems to be working fine, I guess its a metter of how long it will last. I had to clock it properly which was also on the recomendation of Zeeman. The specs are 0.53 A/R, 57 Trim ,0.63 A/R

The kit comes with T-clamps. You may be able to use some of them, but you'll have to get a few bigger ones for the throtle body and intercooler sections.

I just have the cast manifold as I'm limited to 225 WHP so no need to go ramhorn or anything crazy. It also seems fine, its just a cast log, not sure if you can really do that wrong.

I ended up reinstalling my kit from the manifold around.

Zeeman is the man and when he was tuning he was showing me all the thing that were wrong and how to make them better and what I should be replacing and improving.

With Zeemans mad skills he made 216WHP and 172WTQ on a stock D16Y8.

Bottom line. If you get the kit install it yourself. Better yet have Zeeman do it!

If you really want to buy on of the kits its buyer beware I guess. I'm not a huge fan of Frank but that's a different story for a different day. I'll be getting all my recomendations from Zeeman as far as parts and performance go.

If you have questions PM me or post them up in here. I have first hand experience so I'll do my best to anwswer them.

That is all!

^^ Thanks for providing the details/specs.

Just a couple q's:

Who manufactures the turbos?
What intercoolers do you provide/use?
Do you offer anything for fuel system upgrades, or is that up to the customer?

zeeman 06-May-2010 11:01 AM

Bradsma, you forgot to mention how the "custom made" wastegate dumptube was built so that it exited directly in front of your turbo inlet!!!!! Recycling the exhaust gases into the turbo ROFL. Or how your distributor was actually advanced instead of "retarded so that you can drive the car safely".

Bradsma's wastegate also allowed the boost to drop down from 7psi to 4psi up past 6000rpms, which results in a crappy torque curve and weak top-end power. A proper Electronic Boost Controller controlled by Neptune cured this problem however.

I think Bradsma's post clears things up pretty well. You get a very cheap kit with parts that don't work or weren't installed properly, or just left out all together (like his IAT sensor).

If you want to use a cheap low quality turbo kit AT LEAST get it installed by someone who has the knowledge and experience to install it properly and won't leave parts out (that were originally on the car) that will drastically effect the way the car will run.

Garrett, Precision, Borg Warner and Turbonetics (to name a few) have been used on cars for decades and have been proven on high horsepower race cars. Garrett is even the supplier for many OEM turbo cars. So one thing is right, pick a brand that has been proven for decades and you won't have any problems.

Installing them properly and having the CHRA at the proper angle (not over a certain degree) is also key to long turbo life and sufficient oiling and oil draining out of the turbo. With the center section (CHRA) at too much of an angle the oil won't properly lubricate the bearings or drain out of the turbo properly causing all sorts of issues.

I don't know how much i'd use a turbo thats been "hand balanced" since they make machines to do that properly.

I've done turbo kits that make 340whp @ 9psi on a Precision GT30 on a GSR engine and d16z6's that make 315whp @ 15psi with a Borg Warner turbo to show you what a quality turbo kit will/should make.

Keep in mind, ultimately (this goes for EVERYTHING in life, not just cars) you get what you pay for.

I forgot about that one Zeeman!

Also, my welder is a professional and welds cages and frames on race cars that do the 1/4 mile in sub 10's so I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

He also told me and I forgot to mention that the downtube is made of a lower quality SS (thin). So putting heat wrap on it like I origonally intended would cause it to crack.

spoolin turbo 06-May-2010 09:33 PM

Some parts you can cheap out on and others you cant. If you want to run a budget kit, just get a good wastegate, bov and turbo.
I'm running a Comp Turbo triple ball bearing that I got from their Canadian dealer. Making over 1000rwhp and spooling great.
Maybe consider grabbing one of those. My buddy is running a 72triple bb and he said it is spooling identical to his 67 journal bearing was and the 72 has a larger exhaust wheel and exhaust housing.

I hope you haven't gotten the wrong idea here... We're not hating on you or the company.

The website gave very little details about the kits, so we just wanted to know the specs. That's all.

Most other turbo kits in that price range or less, come with some questionable components. We weren't saying FP kits are sub-par. We just wanted to know the break down of all components, and the manufacturers of the components.

To be honest, your kits sound pretty solid! In the future if I decide to go turbo I'll definitely come down to check out your setups. Heck I may come down to check them out anyways. :D Sounds like you have a good product for a very competitive price.
