vtec

go for a drive with the vtec solenoid plugged in and go past 6000rpms, then unplug the vtec solenoid (single wire plug) and go for another drive and go past 6000rpms. If you feel/hear a difference (meaning the car is slower) from the first time with everything plugged in, then its working, if you don't feel/hear a difference from the first time with everything plugged in, then chances are its not working. When you unplug the solenoid the CEL will come on and give you a code 21 for the vtec solenoid (not a big deal) and typically when vtec isn't working you will have a CEL on all the time, or when you try to engage vtec the CEL will come on.

Vtec will engage just before 5k rpm depending on the oil level/sensor etc. Will be around 4600-4800rpm.
I think the reason it was mentioned above to bring it past 6k is to get a better feel for the power output.
Also, make sure the engine is warmed up to operating temperature.

depending on the mods to the engine you can hear it. I have a SRI with an AEM dry flow filter on a big bore TB and a sk2 IM. OBX headers magna flow cat and sk2 cat back. I can definatly hear VTEC just fine on my d16z6.

And to everyone giving false information on WHEN it kicks in, just stop now. Its doesnt "kick in @ 4600-4800" rpms...it kicks in at slightly different rpms for EVERY different VTEC motor. MOST D16 vtec motors hit VTEC @ 5400rpms STOCK.
Open your ears and pay attention to your tachs people. Unless you have a VTEC controller on a chipped P28 with the vtec engagement set lower, your D16z6 or y8 will hit Vtec at around 5500rpms, end of discussion.

Not through your exhaust you dont...exhasut mods means diddly **** in terms of hearing VTEC. SOHC VTEC is ONLY on the Intake side.
Bullshit you don't. Maybe on a Z6...but my D16y8's VTEC is VERY noticeable..in fact a few people thought i had a dual cam in there.

Maybe the factory setting on the Z6's ECU's is 4600-4800 but 100% for sure the Y8 is 5400rpms.

Mine kicks in just like that one, except sounds a lot more aggressive.
