I have a 1998 Acura 1.6 EL. I just recently changed the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat today. When I was driving I noticed my speedometer wasn't working properly. Then the engine check light came on. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

it goes up in first gear but not properly, then when i shift to second it drops right down to 0 and goes up for a bit then the other gears it doesnt even move at all just stays at 0.

Ive seen a few video on how to change timing belt and water pump, so i know there's a lot of work and cables to disconnect in order to even access the stupid thing.... The only thing I can assume you've done is disconnected the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) and while putting it back, i hasn't connected properly or something like that. I think you may need to go back a double check your work.

Beyond that Im clueless... I tried looking it up online for you to no avail.

On your transmission there is a VSS (Variable Speed Sensor). It's right near your thermostate housing, that area anyway. It looks like a stick going into your transmission. It's 1 or 2 10mm (maybe 12) bolts holding it into place. You might have got some fluid in the sensor. Unplug it, look for corrosion(sp?). Brake clean and compressed air work nice. Or maybe read the CEL.

I do have an extra VSS, weird thing to have laying around but... If that's your problem I can sell it for cheap.

Thanks F8i it worked. I just took a napkin and wiped the tips of the plug and vss. It left a small green coolant colour on the napkin. Hopefully that fixed the problem. Cleared the engine code and it hasn't come back yet.
