non vtec to vtec

hey guys i just got a new motor its a 91 si motor and its non-vtec and i wanna make it v-tec and just wanted some opinions. Does a non vtec that has had vtec added run the same as say a d16y8? will it produce slightly more power than a d16 or the same? the 91 si has 108hp sotck i just want to know if it will run smooth and produce about the same power?

you need to do more then just the head, you'll need an ECU also. how many K's on your motor? you can prolly buy a d15b vtec or d16y8 complete from a JDM parts supplier for less then the cost of converting your motor with a lot less head ache.

thanks for the reply dusty....the motor has 72000kms on it i know there is alot involved in putting on vtec but i have an experienced mechanic that will do it for me i just want to know if the motor will run the same and what kind of hp it will be putting out....like i said the stock motor has 108hp i just wanna basically know if it will run like my old d16y8 i had in before... will i notice a difference in the way it drives? will it have less or more hp? and will it affect the engine in a negative or positive way....basically all the pro's and con's of doing something like this. Thanks for the replies guys

I find that vtec civics sucks too much gas compared to the regular engine. for a few hp gain I don't think it is worth it. just my 2 cents

Mini-me's dont like boost because of the higher compression...it can be done but very carefully and with ALOT of tweaking...not worth it IMO because of unreliability.

my last 92 hatch was a mini-me swap....had a few problems with vtec wiring, kept throwing codes...ran alright after I got it tuned by zeeman...had detonation problems because of the increased CR, had to retard timing a little bit to stop it from detonation which took away from performance.....a lot of f%^$ing around...

I would save up a bit more coin and find a b16 swap. I know of a couple complete and almost complete swaps for sale for around $1500. ie. engine, trany, ecu, etc

I scored an lsvtec-supercharged swap for a steel of a price. engine/sir 5spd, axles, ecu, harness, mounts, vortec sc, full exhaust for $2100.

personally the HP gain isnt that huge, but everyone does like to hear a lil vtackyyyy :P brrrrrrrAAAAAP, their not the ideal motor for boost but it can still be done.. , my buddy just did a nice minime, and his cars clean as hell runs great.

Thanks for the replies guys....from what people have been saying and from what i read i just gotta make sure i get it done right....i know its not much of a hp gain but i heard it does make a significant difference and it does increase the torque as well??? i dont think i will boost it most likely gonna build it all motor.

Although it's not a huge gain, suprisingly it does make a difference because civics are so light. With my minime the biggest difference I noticed was torque. Get it done right and you should be fine.
