DIY Oil Change

Ok before you all shoot me cause I'm in the wrong section, read me out.

I've read a bunch of diys here on doing your own oil change. Watched a bunch of videos as well, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing.

Going to attempt my first diy oil change tomorrow on my 02 SI. Its a 1.7. My question is how much oil do I pour in? I know you'll all say until its between the two holes on the dipstick, but I want a basic idea. I don't want to pour too much, I know that's bad. Any clue?

Ps, any pointers just in case I need any? lol

no its 3.5 liters if u put 4 itll go over the holes im positive becuase i work at an oil changing place, yea its wack.

if the filter is tight ull need a tool to take it off like a fliter plier or band wrench (google image) or just put on a rubber grip so u have lots of grip and keep twisting with all ur might until it budges ahaha.

lube the gasket of the oil filter with a little oil, just so it doesnt stick on from the heat for when its time to change again.

dont tighten the drain plug tooo tight, just enough so it woulnt drip out...

people say u HAVE to change the gasket on the drain plug everytime, but i change it maybe every 4 oil changes and never had a problem with it.

hope that helps, good luck

I poke a screw driver through the filter when I can't get it off haha. Gets a little messy. For oil, poor 3.5L then add as you check. Also you have to let the oil go into the oil filter so you can start the car once oil is at full and turn it off. Check the level again, should be a little lower.
GL and hope you don't make a mess out of your garage/drive way haha. I find throttle body cleaner works well on concrete garage floor haha.

just use a oil filter wrench if its being retarded.

i typically use 4 , but they tend to take a bit more
btw, take in consideration that the filter takes up oil to

I bought a 2 1/2 ton jack and 2 ton stands from CT. Is that strong enough for my car? Where do I jack up the car with the jack, under the Lcr?

if you look in the manual it tells you exactly how much oil your car needs.

look under the front bumper on the sides, sort of directly below your headlights. You will see a round flat piece welded to the body. Jack the car up there, then place the jack stands on the jacking points. Make sure the jack stands are centered. Once you have done one side, do the same to the other. Before you go under the car gently try and rock it side to side, it should not move. Double check you are on the correct mounting points, and you are good to go.

Mike, if you feel uncomfortable doing it, bring the oil and filter in tomorrow, I have no problem changing the oil as well.

The oil level will just barely touch the dipstick.

Yeah check the owners manual for the amount needed. Some people say it's good to change oil when the car is warm so the old oil flows out easier, but that causes more problems than it's worth. You can burn yourself with warm oil or even the warm parts of the car. But something else that people fail to realize, when metal gets warm it expands. But different metals expand at different rates. So the engine metal can expand more than the metal of the oil filter, making it even harder to take off if you don't have proper tools or leverage.

If you want to be really safe, I'd say use a torque wrench for your filler bolt when you put it back on. If you want to hand tighten it, use your head. Obviously make sure it's tight so it doesn't come loose when driving. But don't Hulk Hogan it on there either.

When draining have the oil catch pan and some rags close by.

^^for manual there is a drain bolt on the side in the bottom, drain that out. now just at the top of tranny on the side there is a filler bolt. fill till it overflows. transmisison fluid should be leveled with the bottom of the filler hole. look up in the manual for exact location of the drain/filler bolts. also would recommend trying to loosen both before you drain the oil because if you cant get the filler bolt out and you drained it already, well then you are in a bit of a pickle. lol
