CDN B16A2 - Burning Oil - Questions

Hi all,

I have a 00 SiR motor in my car. Every 5K, it burns about 3/4 litres-1 litre. I asked around, most people tell me that it's normal for the sir motors to burn this much oil (I doubt this). I was also told to use non-synthetic oil b/c it will burn less oil. I have been using 10w30 by catrol non synthetic for 3 yrs now. I was recently told the reverse and that the motor will burn less oil with synthetic oil. Should I change over to synthetic? Will it burn less?
Should I replace the head gasket maybe?

I might be selling the car this summer and I don't want to keep hidden facts to a potention owner and have it blow on them if they don't check it after around 3k b/c it's usually below minimum if I don't check every 3 weeks or so.

Also I would like to mention that my driving habbits have no effect on this. I sometimes drive 5K without redlining the car once..most of the time maybe 2-3 times every 5 k for a quick few seconds. I do this to avoid burning more oil. I just drive it like a granny to and from work.

What do you all think?

Thanks

synthetic is better, it helps older engines and is good for new engines. Is oil leaking from your head gasket? if not leave it alone. Are you burning coolant as well?, all vtec engines burn some amount of oil, when vtec activates. (when you check your engine oil is it substantially dark?)

Hi,

I don't see any leaks from the head gasket. My coolant goes down a bit in the winter months only (it was a bit below minimum a couple days ago). In the spring/summer/fall months it's fine and rarely ever needs topping up. I know about the burning of oil when redlinning and hitting vtec a lot, but I rarely ever hit vtec when I drive, maybe 2-3 times every 5K b/c of this issue. When I check my oil it's very clear, not dark...it starts getting dark near my oil change at 4-5K.

Thanks

THATS NORMAL bud!!! how many kms do you have on your engine anyways?? It probably has more than 150xxx. Don't expect it to perform like the new engines.

Ya it has about 150K. I know some Hondas with 300+K and they don't burn any oil at all. Not sure if the SiR motors are different.

your coolant is just evaporating in the winter months from the cooler temps outside.

Whats the reasoning for using 10w30? I thought that the B series motors used 5w30.
(i don't know if it would have any factor in burning oil as its thicker...maybe higher oil pressures...)

well do you think the previous owner babied that engine and did not beat the crap out of it once in awhile??. Im pretty sure he did. Almost anyone that has a vtec motor especially b series engines beats the crap out of their motor BECAUSE WHY DID THEY GET IT IN THE FIRST PLACE??? to have fun rightttttttttt......!!!!!

I beat the crap out of my motor everytime i get a new one. heheheh.

Anyways, don't put 10w30. stick with 5w30 because of the cool weather. use 10w30 during the summer time. once you put 10w30 right now, your engine will feel sluggish.

It is totally normal. B series will burn oil with higher mileage no mater if it's synthetic or not. Mine burns about the same as the OP stated. However, there is NO blue smoke out the exhaust, even when vtec is engaged.

To the OP: have a friend follow your car and see if there is blue smoke out the exhaust when you run it up into vtec (flat out to 8 grand).

Synthetic IS WAY BETTER than normal oil. Especially for higher revving engines like these. So keep using synthetic.

My B16 has over 200k on it and it runs like new. In fact it performs a lot better than some new engines out there. I change the oil regularly, do all necessary maintenance and take care of it well.

the piston rings are starting to go on you...... the b16 is notorious for it. always keep an eye on your oil levels. Although synthetic oils are much better for lubricating, they also have a tendency to leak though older seals in ways conventional oils don't.

I use supersyn 5w30 and hit vtec like 30 times a week. the most oil i poured in was 300ml between the change and that was after 3hrs of highway. the block is unknown km...atleast 110 000

I have the same thing with my car. I pass emisions though each time at a honda dealer as a hot rod. Anyway i am thinking i am going to replace the motor with another new b16 from japan. But i was wondering would it be better if i try to replace the rings? ( i think that is the reason why i am burning oil) My oil by the time i change it is so black and there is not a lot of it left in the pan either. the compresion on the engine was fine though this summer. I need to find out wheather to get a new motor or try to fix this one from burning oil.

I dont think anyone has had the same problem as me so it seems. that must mean that my engine is actualy burning oil throught the rings. I have tried ams oil royal purple and all synthetics. I think it time for a B20 bottom end.

i have the same engine, its normal for b16 engines to burn oil, mine burns a bit more than yrs anyways and im not stressin, if u really wana stop it or lower the amount of oil burnin, drop yr engine and get the head and bottom end machined, new seal and everything! as for yr synthetic oil question stick with the non-synthetic oil!
i'd use mobile 1 aswel

1. B16's do burn a bit of oil.
2. Never use regular motor oil......period.
3. Go with synthetic.

I've asked around with what type of synthetic to use (thought I am currently using Castrol Synthetic) I will switch to Mobil 1 Extended Performance available at Crappy Tire or Royal Purple available at Karbelt, Performance Improvements or Part Source. The reason I'm switching is because Castrol tends to burn a bit more. Not sure why but Catrol does burn more than other brands plus it gets darker quickly.

Have you checked the cam seal if its leaking or your valve cover gasket leaking into the spark plug holes?

Oh ya........5W-30 for winter and 10W-30 for summer and some synthetic oils can cause leakage around seals after a while but its better than destroying the motor with conventional motor oil (mineral oil)/non-synthetic.

That's my 2 cents!
