B18/B20 vtec discussion

Here is another question.
Using a B20b block, I could swap B20z phr pistons. According to the compression calculator, with stock head not milled, that should put me around 9.9:1 cr. Would that be enough clearance if I used a gsr cam? Now I don't know this for a fact but I believe gsr cams have longer duration than b16? I could just order the pistons and clay it to check, but don't want to waste money.
Any help will be appreciated.

Not 100% sure on that one.

I am looking to build a b20 vtech in my eg, I was wondering where I can get a reliable source for the motor, and what is recommended to have it running smooth and pulling as much power possible (stock). Shoudl I even be considering a b20vtech or should I go for an LsVtech???

A basic LS vtec motor, all stock internals, properly tuned NA will make around 160whp. B20 vtec, around 180whp...but the results may vary depending on other components used, condition of the engine and how well it is tuned.
If you're planning to boost it in the future, go LS vtec for it's stronger cylinder sleeves. If you're sticking with NA, go B20 for more torque and drivability.
What are you planing on using the car for? Daily driving, drag, tack...?

Depending on what I get done to it, probably only summer driving, storing it in the winter and definitely taking it to the track, no doubt about that...I dont intend on boosting it, do you know how much Id be looking at for just the motor????

As for pricing, you could check the TCC classifieds and vendors section. Wouldn't hurt to look on kijiji either. Seem some good deals on motor there as well. I found the LS motor for my build on the TCC classifieds and got it for $140!
Good luck. Let us know if you find one.

$140.00??????are you kidding me thats really good...the full motor????Ive been looking on the classifieds havent found anything yet...Ill definitely keep my yes open though...Im building this car from scratch, its a stock 92 Hatchback SI...all original as well...

^^Yeah full motor (but no intake or exhaust manifolds and no flywheel), it's a high mileage motor (270xxxkms) but I'm rebuilding it with new bearings/piston rings etc... so the mileage didn't mater so much. Was still a kick-*** deal! hehe.
Since it sounds like you'll want to just swap heads (basically) and get it tuned, you'll want one with less kms and in better condition to begin with. Therefore it'll cost you more, but you'll be able to put it in and run it (more or less).
Take your time and search around for good deals, there are lots out there if you can find them.
Are you planning on doing the work yourself or taking it to a shop?

How's the christmas tree farm business these days?

^Hey, how goes it?
It's going ok. Been slow the past couple years, letting the young trees grow tall enough to be sold.
My build is going slow, haven't really done much lately. Time and money are always the main issue...lol.
How's you're b20?

Hey guys just started my build and sorry in advance for any stupid questions I find it hard to use the search properly. So ive got a b18b1 block and b16a1 head for my build. Now can the b18b1 intake mani work with the head. Where would I be able to find water / oil pump and I could use gsr one correct. And final question is would a d16y8 starter and altenator work on my block sorry for being noob and thx in advance

^No problem. Ask away. That's what these forums are for.
B18b1 intake mani will not work on the b16 head. You'll need a b16a1/a2 or b18c/c5(integra type R) intake manifold. A B18c1 (integra GSR) intake manifold will not work either. The GSR head is a little different than the other vtec b-series heads.
Water pump, oil pump and timing belt should all be used from a vtec b-series engine. Can be bought from the dealership or any parts store. Just beware of lower quality aftermarket brands. Don't skimp on the timing belt especially. Best to buy it from honda or a good quality aftermarket brand like dayco etc.
I don't think any d-series components are interchangeable with b-series engines. So no, the starter and alternator from a d16 will not work.
Good luck with the build!
