91 Civic Engine recommendation

I'm thinking of doing an engine upgrade on my 91 Civic Si. It's got 277k, burns a lot of oil and I have driven it hard. What should I put in? Ideally I would like a brand new engine of exactly the same kind. I'm a no-nonsense type guy. I want the swap to be 100% perfect and not have to worry about flashing computers or failing etests. Also, any recommendations for a straight up guy who will do it right. I don't mind paying top dollar for a perfect job. The rest of the car is perfect.

the D16A6 is a nice engine, worth saving to be sure! why not just rebuild it completely?

if the price tag for a rebuild shocks you, then there are numerous options that will satisfy your requirements for reliability and driveability. OBD0 computers can be tuned very nicely (or stock maps can be loaded) and that's nothing to be afraid of when dealing with a pro like zeeman (andrew).

again, i love the idea of keeping that engine, but there are other options as well. twin cam ZC, B16A, B17, B18C, B20B, D16Z6 or D16Y8 are all very good options but ZC and D series you get to keep your stock engine mounts too.

Many swaps that aren't direct are not a headache as long as a reputable shop does it. No short cuts or ghetto wiring and everything will work and function as if the engine belongs in it.

^You have several options.

-go to a jdm engine importer where they sell just about every type of engine you can imagine. They typically have between 40-80,000kms on them and most of these shops/importers make sure these engines have good compression before they are sold. You will typically pay more from an importer vs from a private seller, though these engine are usually guaranteed to be in good condition.

-search for people selling engines on websites like this one (TCC), or kijiji...etc. the prices will vary and condition is not always guaranteed, but you can find really good deals if you look long and hard enough.

Do a compression and leak-down test before you buy it.

Sometimes you can find a whole car with the engine you want for cheap, but then you're left with the hassle of parting out the car or getting rid of what you don't want/need. But then, some see it as a bonus.

All depends on what you want.

There are quite a few. I'd suggest contacting or visiting several to help you make a decision.

There are a few of them as TCC affiliates, you can check them out in the vendors section of this site.
