tire punctures???

my friend has a set of yokohama parada spec 2's and ran over a small screw. it became imbedded in the tread and had to be removed with a screwdriver. the hole is a few milimeters deep but the tire is still holding air fine. how many layers does this tire consist of, i know it has a steel belt but would the screw have to go through the steel belt and another layer of rubber to puncture the tire?

If it didn't puncture the tire, then you have no worries. Even if a steel belp is broken, it's still OK. Check it with soapy water, if it bubles, then it's leaking. Tires have a few layers, inner liner, belts(steel/polyester), tread.

I would plug it for safety sake...the tire is weakened and a blow out is more imminent now that the integrity of the tire is lowered

I'll remember that if I ever see you selling a set of tires.

No, it's not ok. The speed rating and characteristics of the tire will change. Once a belt shifts or breaks, you should replace the tire.

i drove my friend to a tire shop to have that rim checked out today and the guy at the store said that we were CRAZY to even bring it there. the screw was so short that it had made a surface hole about 1 mm deep (glass that gets wedged into the tread leave a deeper holes) and had not even penetrated the full tread block. he used the water trick to check for bubbles and obviously it came up negative. he also said that this particular tire(parada spec 2) and most tires in general have numerous protective layers including the steel belt that prevents tire puntures. hope this info helps anyone else that might be having the same problem.

yeah you do that. unfortunatly for you, i don't see myself selling any rims in the near future. i sold my last set of rims two weeks ago and i'm completely done. i've got me a nice set of 18's for summer and a set of stock steelies for winter and that's all i'm gonna need. i'm through with selling rims.

True, the speed rating is no longer valid. HOWEVER, when tires properly repaired, steel belts are almost always broken when reaming out the puncture to accept the proper size plug. You can always see steel poking out a bit.

Remember that if you ever need to plug a tire.
