Spoilers - why?

Can anyone justify why they get big spoilers on civics? the stock one looks okay, but there are too many home depot style, or just really big spoilers out there.

keeping in mind that the civic is front wheel drive, even with what minimal difference this will make, it will hinder, not improve performance.

and i'd say 90% of people who've gone through puberty agree, they look like crap.

does anyone think they look good? or is there another reason?

People get spoilers because they either like the look of them, or like you said, don't realize their car is FWD.

Personally I don't like them, but I guess it's about the same reason people want body kits, altezza's, ect...

It's all for the looks...I guess

exactly as you said when i was like 13 i loved spoilers now i cant stand them on any car (except the type r), i even saw this supra that was spoilerless and i dont even like that one anymore, ad i loved that one. imo cars look best lowered without a spoiler, but hey thats my style, do what you like you have to drive it

Maybe people like spoilers for the same reason you like indigo gauges and carbon fibre stickers

drag jay, drag...spoilers on a car create drag and drag makes you slower and decreases your fuel mileage the same way a close bed door on a pick up truck does...havent u ever wondered why people drive around with the bed door open or with the net thing there instead?

a "proper" spoiler will add some stability at higher speeds (like above speed limit speeds) but for the most part they are there for style. Have you ever seen what a big spoiler does at 90mph? they flex and bow all over the place cuz they arent designed for performance but only for looks.

dont go for anything bigger than what is offered as stock equipment cuz atleast those ones work with the car instead of against it.

i know the whole drag concept and the truck tailgates thing...

and i know that they are useless at normal speeds, but how do you figure thay are useless above 90 also? so all the touring car wings, like in the SPEEDVISION CUP with the realtime rsx's, are for looks too?

but im sure you were referring to the APC wings and crap as being weak....

and if the wing just creates drag.... than it hinders a RWD car also?
and yes i know... downforce adds grip to the rear wheels, thus better grip in RWD... but how can better grip be bad on a FWD car?

cuz the grip is being put on the wheels that dont need it the most...heavy downforce on the rear of a car that is powered by the front wheels means it aint gonna handle as well...not to mention the daily driver dont have a wind tunnel to test the settings on a wing like a race team could...also race cars have front air dams and splitters that create downforce in the front aswell as tha back for an "even" feeling car that has substantial downforce. and if you watch any kind of racing you will see the pit crews adjusting the various spoilers, air dams and splitters to driver feedback and performance...drag/downforce can make or break it when it comes to lap times and top speeds

proper wings for proper cars...street cars dont benefit from them other than having to stop for fuel more often and having a place to put your coffee when ur parkin lot chilling

like this....

spoilers are used are cars that are too light.... if you're putting in your own spoiler, chances are, your car does not fall into that category.

Tre, I'm doing stupid mods as more of a joke.. haha

I got into a fight with a friend who tried putting on windshield washer jets with LEDs..... I decided to rice up my interior...

you ever notice how the pit guys PUSH the car by the wing... and there is NO deflection in the wing. the wing is fuggin SOLID!! on all the street wings I've seen, they flop around in the wind like grandma's ******* w/o a bra... and if you even lean on a wing, it gets all bent outta shape. they COULD do something if only they were structurally correct. so that's the first step!! something that flops around is no good.

When your car needs to corner at 100mph on a track, then a wing might add some use to stablize the rear end (and this won't help much if you are running on your all season tires).

Even then, if you insist on adding one, sure. Why not? If you like it, go for it. But don't think it will make your car go faster in a straight line.

most people get them for looks over anything i think.. but most of them i think are really ugly...

rimms are the same... their main purpose is that they are supposed to be really strong and really light... a lot of the ones people buy.. are the cheap ones that can warp easily and really offer no weight loss for the car.

at least a lot of rimms look a lot better than ****ty hub caps.

why do people buy spoilers? why do people tint their windows the colour of the car? why do people put on altezzas? why do people love stickers?..and i can go on..its just personal taste, some people like certain things and others dont...so if you see someone with something on their car that YOU dont like, keep the comment to yourself and laugh about it later..but sometimes its hard to even do that lol

to each his own....

if people like them, let them, and if they dont then fine... as long as they are happy with their car then why bust their chops...

i dont like spoilers either but if they think they are nice then i say have fun with it

I'll say first, I'm not a big fan of big wings. But they can (at high-very high speeds) put a little more weight down on the rear wheels and counter the weight of the engine up front for cornering.

Wings on FWD cars are a bad idea. For every bit of downforce the wing creates drag which slows you down on the highway. Every bit of downforce made puts more weight on your car at the point where the wing is attached, i.e. your trunk lid. For an example of how pushing down on a trunk lid effects your front tire grip, take a hot wheels car and push down on the trunk lid, nice wheelie isn't it.

So essentially when you are travelling at high speed into a corner with a wing, you aren't travelling as fast because of the drag. You turn in and your rear end is being pushed down so your car balance moves further towards understeer so you are floating out of the corner. You try and put some power down but you have less front grip than your car would have without a wing so your car is slower out of the turn too.

FWD race cars have wings but there is more to them than that. If you have an aerodynamic underbody airflow system then a wing can enhance it's effect but your aerodynamic centre of pressure would be in the middle of the car instead of just pushing your trunk down. If the centre of pressure is between your axles then you start to get cornering benefits. FWD race cars have managed underbody flows so the wings on them are helpful.

The only place left where a wing would help is controlling high speed oversteer. If your FWD car has uncontrollable oversteer at high speeds then there are two possible factors:

1) Your car is setup poorly and you should slow down.

or

2) You are driving beyond your abilities and should slow down.

A wing is not going to solve any of these core problems.

Yeah most get the spoilers for looks i say if your're going to get a spoiler make sure it's from a good company and that it doesn't take away from the car's appearence.
