Well usually a good 3-4 coats is fine, but that's properly using an air gun to paint as opposed to using a spray can on a hood
So im not sure how many coats that is, but priming isn't as bad as giving it a base/clear coat with a spray can b/c you have to sand down the hood after you prime anyway.

I suggest using the gun or renting one to do the clear and take ur time doing it in a very very clean environment and do a good 3-4 coats properly, but you can tell while painting where the limit must be set.

You don't have to clear coat it if you don't want to, but if you want that extra shine, then do it but it's not mandatory. I would.

I feel sorry for u

why are you the only one on the site that makes good come backs? hahaha

but for an fyi i was with an 18 year old a few weeks ago so i really get the best of both worlds... that being youth and good looks on one hand... and then experiance and ease of use on the other....

for My Blue Si. the hood isn't meant to look all that great as it is dented a little.... i was just gonna throw the primer on then put a few coats of flat black on it for the winter then get either a straight hood or maybe get a little carbon... thanks for the info though

being with an 18yr old and staying with one are 2 different issues, you gotta have the package to please, otherwise "ticker-tape" is the next best place for action where you will really please.

3 coats of clear is all u need.
u will need clear coat forshure if u want that gloss look.
or u will only get a slight gloss look depending on the colour u paint it. and also the hood will fade out tooo quick and wont match the rest of the car.
also using a spray gun is best because standard can's come wit different nozzles and it isnt fine like the gun's so i recommened u use a spray gunf or profesionalism. or get a bodyshop to do it for like under 150.

well gloss isn't a concern cause the hood is just getting painted black... and the hood isn't even in that good a condition but as i said above it was free.... its just temporary....

what grit sand paper? and should i do it by hand? when i was sanded the paint of originally i used a huge disk grinder very carefully.... and that would take it down to metal very quick....

most body shops use 400 grit for the primer sanding, but I find it leaves very fine scratches in the paint If I cared about how it looked, I'd use 600 on the primer, then paint 3 light coats of base, 3 light coats of clear.

The thinner the total thickness of the paint, the harder it will be for it to chip.

Ever notice that the stock bumper has no primer on it? - that's for chip resistance.

i think i'll use 600 grit though... all i want to do is scuff the primer though?
