headlight relay hookup

ok the situation is that i got higher voltage bulbs for my headlights...the higher voltage caused my wiring to burn ( ground to be specific)...now i found out by the help of some of the members here and a lil bit of researching that i can put a 5-pin relay in between the headlight connector and the battery....

now..my question...how do i hook up the 5-pin relay....i mean the wiring in my car is only 3 wires....ground...high..low....how do i hook up the 5-pin relay...i have a EK 96 4dr...can anyone post a site that helps me out on this...aand i need ur comments and suggestions too...appreciate the help.

what do i need and where can i get it to complete this project

remove your high wattage bulbs. not only do they burn wiring, but they will cause discoloration in your lense plastic. just ask civic [-_-] boy about that.

if you really want though, you CAN hook up your relay like so....

you need 2 relays, one for low beam, one for high.

the relay has 5 pins. 30, 85, 86, 87, and 87A

30 is the fused battery power
85 is the switched low beam wire
86 is the low beam ground
87 is the high wattage bulb positive
87A doesn't get used (it's the opposite of pin 87 so when 87 is hot, 87A is not, and vice versa).

the other relay is the same deal, except for highbeams.

but bbarbulo..cant i use 87A for high beams...so when i switch between high and low beam....87 and 87A can go back and forth...just like u said "its the opposite of pin 87 so when 87(lowbeam) is hot, 87A(highbeam) is not, and vice versa"....so basically all 5 pins get used.

no, cuz then when your headlights are turned off, the highbeams would be on, even with the engine shut off and the key removed and the lights turned off, your hi beam would remain on.

those are the same wires left and right.... in the wire harness they are just split off. so all you gotta do is pick one side, left OR right it doesn't matter. then run the output of the relay (pin 87) to both left and right headlights.

do you even understand how a relay works? there is a coil inside, the coil is triggered by your trigger wire (pin 85) and it's grounded by pin 86. that coil once energized pulls a large 'switch' which in turn lets power flow from pin 30 to pin 87. when the coil is not energized the switch is opened and diverts power from pin 30 to pin 87A.

oh yeah, I should mention, you need a relay that's normally open. there are also relays that are normally closed, which would be the wrong one for your application. so beware when buying it. I recommend NAPA as a good source for relays.

i guess i will pick the passenger side...which has more room and is easier to work with...besides the fuse box and the battery ground are right there so its gonnna be direct contact..but where should i mount the relays...becuz i gotta protect it from the snow..rain..dust.

can i get relays that r covered or should i jus tape the whole thing up real nice....any suggestions anyone.

P.S. thanks bbarbulo..i am gonna bug u again if i get stuck
