glass sunroofs

just a quick question... my friend recently bought a 90 crx si. everything is good. but the sunroof on it is metal. and he wants a glass roof in it. cause i have a 93 civic si hatch wiht a glass roof.

basically though he has gone to many auto body and glass shops and they all said that it can't be done. whats the deal with that?? i mean now that i think of it i haven't seen a crx with a glass roof but you can get sunroofs put in anything... anyone know of a shop or a person that has dont this before??

PM me if you have any info

thanks
rick

I've heard on some of the other CRX boards that you can drop in a Prelude sunroof (same gen as the CRX) and that it'll fit perfectly.
However I can't confirm it since I don't know anyone that has done it.

Might be work checking out though.

my buddy has a 91 crx...he spoke with a glass shop and they said they could put a pop-up glass sunroof in. The metal is bubbling and b/s cant fix it properly.

why couldn't they put a glass one in? wouldn't it be as simple as putting a glass one in a car with no sunroof? maybe just get a bigger one or something, but i don't see how it'd be impossible....

if that was supposed to be a funny lemme know k??
if it wasn't..a targa roof would be a viable option..
eliminates the sun-roof all together and let's him have a "delsol" type look..
roof sides could be easily strengthened..
it'd be a one of a kind mod to a crx..

if anything ever goes wrong with mine and i was told it couldn't be fixed i'd probably go for it..more along the lines of t-bar tho i think..

I got ya Si Veloz, I've only seen "convertible" CRX's but they wouldn't be very practical for our winters.

I remember I looked into getting a new glass sunroof (moonroof), but it was so expensive cause it was all custom.

It would be pointless to do a pop up one since you'd lose the power sunroof of the Si.

I'd say do the Prelude one, measure it out and see if it can be done. Would be a lot cheaper than getting a new one from Honda. ($400 for a CRX one, not sure about the Prelude one) but ya could check out one from a junkyard for a lot cheaper.

Just a thought.

Marty, great idea but. It's not the roof sides that need to be strengthened, you would have to reinforce the underbody (unibody) so it wouldn't fold in half. Not that easy.

if i ever do it RB, i have access to shyt for just that kinda support..
i would probably add a center bar into the roof as well....like the T-roofs have...supports the glass and strengthens the roof, which in turn takes some of the stress off of the floor..

thanx for the heads up..i would have investigated it a lot more thoroughly before i started anything..

I've got an 89 prelude and an 88 crx, and I just took measurements on the sunroofs.
CRX = 36 1/4 in x 18 3.5/4 (92cm x 48 cm)
Prelude = 35 1/4 in x 18 3.5/4 (89.5cm x 48cm)

Pretty close dimensions, but will the lude roof fit it the crx? not sure

DJTre: Since ya have both cars ya really have nothing to lose by trying it out!

I say go for it!
I would have tried it if I would have known about it originally!

This post was actually something my buddy rick was trying to help me with... Here's what I've found out so far...

1) The standard places ie. apple er somewhere else are telling me it can't be done b/c it is a much bigger sunroof then most ie. needs custom cuts which they won't do.

2) A guy in burlington (Burlington Sunroofs) I believe says that he doesn't think it can be done b/c of the curve in the roof. He said that the glass could be custom cut however it would have to be tempered so it wouldn't shatter if there was an accident or something and that there aren't any places that would temper a custom glass cut.

I did do some website surfing and found someone who had a custom job done where almost the whole roof is glass... I'm wondering the downfalls to having so much freakin glass in the car are... other then the weight gain. How viable is the T-top idea?? Had them in 2 nissan pulsars... sooooo cool to have....

I was thinking to just take out my sunroof, and cut a bigger hole and drop in a bigger class, fixed and cannot be opened.

Or, get a moon roof, one in the front, and one for the back.

Marty, I was gonna do the sliding rag-top thing on my Samurai... cuz it'd be tite to just chill in the car and gaze at the stars when I'm out camping/offroading, ya know? I've seen a lo-lo Civic (dubbed Bad Apple) it had mad hydros on it, and it had one of those tops. It all came to an unfortunate end when a hydro failed on the highway and it went tumbling end over end... but it was a magazine car... in Euro Low Rider 2-3 years ago.
