EK Hatchback, trunk leaking when rains

I would like to know if it is just me, or other EK Civic Hatchback owners also shares the same problem.

I don’t know when did it start, but whenever it rains, my trunk will have a little puddle of water in it. As I drive in rain, the splash from road and tires seems be able to get into the trunk from BELOW, and the spare tire area will have a little puddle. Sometimes small, sometimes as deep as an inch… So much you can hear the water ripple it was scary. I remember one time it even froze on me, a huge chunk of ice…

The interior seems fine, there is this black coating all over the trunk, no rust it seems. I am not sure about the body below that area. I never checked.

Anyone has the same problem? Would a body shop or garage be able to fix it?

Thanks

It must be corroded, but for a 2000...weird. Have you undercoated your car since purchased?

I don't believe I have had it coated. But one time, I was drive too fast and the car went over an elevated manhole, the car literally went flying and then hit the ground. It was like 2 and half years ago. I am not sure if that damaged anything, or even made a dent in the underbody...

Check it out and get it patched up, it's probably corroded a bit and water is slipping it's way threw and eventually it's going to ****** and get worse.

wierd...the spare tire well has drainage holes you can use, but if these were open for water to get in, then it would come out by the same token... they are rubber plugs. I'd say either your seal around the trunk is leaking, or when you attempted to fly your car instead of driving, you tore something wide open. Get a hose, fold the rear seats, and have your finacee hose the rear end while you watch from inside

I had the same problem but I think it was cuz of an audio install. Nevertheless, I found out where the water was seeping through and used some sealant/silicone and patched it up. No more water

Try and find out where the h2o is coming from and then seal it off if possible.

Hey man, i had the same problem with my EK hatch as well. I had to seal my taillights with silicone on the back and it went away. Hope that helps.

Closed cell foam tape from Home depot... that is your answer to tail light leakage. My 300 ZX turbo was rotted to hell cause of the tail lights leaking. Fix that ASAP and one day just shop-vac the water out, and leave everything open one nice day in order to dry it out. Just remove the light fuses so your battery won't drain.

I can't picture what the tail light leakage looks like... I guess I will ask during the meeting. But IIRC, Honda did a testing and use pressure hose to ****** the car from top and back, no leakage they told me. So I am assuming it is from the bottom.

But it is always to check it again myself.

pressurized water will just bounce off... you need to have water flowing out of a regular garden hose to simulate rain and have it flow down the roof and down the back window. The lights have this foam gasket around the back or it, and it's prolly not doing the job.

Had the same exact problem when I got my hatch. On my car, the water was getting in from the air vents in the back. ( the ones that take in the air from the outside) They're located near the bottom of the rear lights. You'll have to take out the plastic center panel from the inside, and seal around the plastic inlets. Then take the rear bumper off and seal the air inlets form the outside. The foam tape around these vents tends to turn crusty and brake off. After sealing the edges the problem went away.

Hope that helps.

Plastic centre panel, you mean the hand break area?

When my car is parked, and rain falls from above, there are no water inside the spare tire area, so I must be getting it while I am driving.

Gosh... there are just so many possibilities...

The plastic panel is the one in the back of the car. The one that sits over the hatch latch, at the very back of the car.

The water seems to be getting in at a different rate, too. Just over the weekend, it was raining and I checked, it was wet, but not flooded... lol
