Tipping

coming from a bartender, i cant stand when people are cheap......
Some people dont tip because they think we get paid well, but dont think we get paid **** because we are supposed to make money off tips. If a drink is $3.75, dont leave a quarter, leave the $1.00, but if it was me, i'd pay $5.00 and walk away..... The least I tip for a drink is $1.00.....
Food I usually judge by the bill, but nothing less that $4.00 ever.....cuz I know how it is...

There is no "Should I or should I not" in this world. Everything happens for a reason. Tipping is a sign of an appreciation from the customer towards the good service the waiter/waitress provides.
I have received pretty bad services before, on a couple occasions and therefore, I left no tips. I don't look down on any professions, but if you want to be a waiter, then you need to service people with smile, remember what they ordered and always comply their needs. If I wave my hand for something, I better get someone within 5 minutes. Not 10, not 15, but ASAP. It ain't easy being a waiter. People often look down on such job. They think it is easy. I personally do not think so.
Having said that, I tip 10% before tax because that is the mininum standard on tipping. If the service is extraordinary, then I will tip more. You have to earn the tip. Money just don't fall from the sky or grow on trees. I earn my own wages so if you want to earn some tips, then you need to work for it - just like how I work for mine.
If you can't be professional about your own line of job, then why should I - a paying customer - giving you any respect and giving you any tips? You earn my tip when you treat your job professionally.

I usually even tip if im getting free pop (ie I'm DD) sometimes I leave a quorter sometimes I leave a doller, it depends on what i grab out of my pocket. Its my way of thanking the bartender for not charging me for drinking pop.
Course I went to this one shit hole once, told the bar tender I was DD and ordered a pop and she charged me 3.50 I was mad...expecially cause it was $2.50 beer that night. I left and took my friends with me, never returned and told everyone I knew about their shity service

so why not name the bar here Danno?
I don't tip for $3 soft drinks. It's not the bar tender's fault but whatever.... I also don't tip when they go out of their way to limit your tip possibilities.
It only makes sense to tip if you go somewhere often.. it's basically bribery...

And what about those places that give your balance in changes, like they would intentionally give you 5 loonies instead of a 5 dollar bill.
I hate waiters standing by the table watching you leaving tips in the tray. I don't mind them counting in front of me, but do it after I am done. Even counting money in front of customer is rude, but chasing after them for lack of tip is even more embrassing (some Chinese waiters do that).
One time (I forgot the exact number), we gave 60 dollars (3 20s) for a 58 dollars meal. The waitress came back with the same 20 dollar bills and said: "not enough, where is the tip?"
sigh... needless to say, I never went back to that place, again.

The worst is in Montreal when you're in a stip club and the waitress won't give you your beer until you pay and tip her a sufficient amount.
I've actually had a wairess say "not enough, more tip" and withold my Molson Dry...WTF...

it depends on the service like some ppl have said, i remember once some waitress was all pissed at us cause a bunch of my friends were loud, this was at pizza hut. . lol and she took forever to bring out pizza and all that crap, so we left her 15cents canadian tire money. . lol there's more CDN tire money stories, but u get the point. .lol
i'm nice if the person is nice to me. . if the person doesn't talk....then i'll do the 15% thing, if the person talks and is nice. . a bit more then 15%. . .

Tip big at the bar early in the night and aviod waiting like a chump, throw $5 bucks around the first couple times and as the night runs down and money goes low u can skimp out or even not tip cuz u have pre-paid your tips for the night...always has worked for me!
Pizza Guys get the nearest rounded dollar from me order is $22.50 guess what? "Keep the change you filthy animal"
Hot Waitresses, depending on snob and service or not get 15-25% depending on who I'm with and how stunna I'm bein that night
Cabbies, since I dont use em cept in St. Kitts I tip em pretty big like 5bucks for puttin up with my drunk nonsense and retarded demands
a standard tip I leave is 15% for good service, with a smile and good food...I dont tip if I dont feel they earned it and I dont feel bad about it at all...infact I'll take something from the place cuz they owe me...I'll over tip if deserved aswell

You nailed it right on the head, you definitely have to earn the tip. I have to go to work and be pleasant to my customers, why shouldn't you? I know that I when I go and do my job, I'm doing it to the best of my ability with a smile on my face because a person is taking time out of their lifeto shop and coming to me for my help. I'm gonna help the person out to the best of my ability coz I don't know how to do it any other way. Why should I expect less when I go out to a restaurant or something like that?
Having said that, I have left a crappy tip only when the service I received called for it. I believe in tipping a fair amount for good service. Waiters and stuff have their own seperate wage structure (ie. lower levels of minimum wage and stuff) because tipping is an essential part of their livelihood.
