Study Shows One Third of All Studies Are Nonsense

CNN story about the study showing studies are garbage.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/HEALTH/07/13....ap/index.html

Here is the project abstract

http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/294/2/218

not bad.

Homer Simpson once said "people can come up with figures to prove anything Brent. 34% of people know that."

There are 3 lies in the world:

Politics, Statistics, and a really, really bad lie.

I say this is another one of those studies that tells me something i already know. Like when the newspaper headline say "pollution kills" or someother common sense thing.

there was this big study on alcohol and they said alcohol also alters distance perception.

some studies are pretty stupid.

i should be considered a top level scientist if these people need research to prove this.

who need years of clinical data for this when i can get the same results by drinking a bottle of jack and videotaping myself plays darts.

LMAO nothing beats a good laugh in the morning.

Man good find Bruce, you are the pride of TCC my friend. I always strongly felt that studies are BS. Meanwhile I have some know it all university people who try to defend the studies.. But really its so full of crap. Lets say for instance they do a study on how strawberries make your dong grow bigger. Well out of all the people they study they can't possible get an accurate answer for the general public. Reason being is that they can't test every age group, nationality, and lifestyles of people around the world so whose to say these "facts" fall true for everybody.

I remember seeing "Study shows your house is more likely to be unsafe with your doors unlocked" like WTF

Did anyone read the atricle?

Moe, it doesn't say all studies are garbage.... it's the people skewing the results accidentally or not...

if this study is saying, studies are garbage, maybe this study is garbage as well?

that's why they included the abstract haha

50% of imported Nissan Skylines used for illegal street racing:

50% nissan skylines deemed racecars for street. well if we have 2 imported here in Canada and 1 of those 2 just got caught street racing, there is 50% making the stat true, but unjust. to many idiot reporters and media to make stats worth anything significant. but saying a Nissan Skyline was used for street racing is a boring title = less papers sold

only stats i thought were fair, were grades in school. if ya get 8/10 its simple unaltered stat of 80% that is about you.

you need a diverse sample of the population, and a large enough sample of the population.

you also need a large enough population for your study for it to mean something.

Premise 1 "Every blue guy I ran into was a criminal."
Premise 2 "I have run into one blue guy in my whole life."

Incorrect Conclusion "Every blue guy is a criminal"

If Premise 2 was "I have run into 3848394 blue guys across earth in different societies, cultures, and status in my whole life" then he might be correct..
