VANCOUVER, May 9 /CNW/ - The union representing Lower Mainland transit
operators expects that Coast Mountain Bus Company will not discipline a bus
driver assaulted by a rider who spit in his face on the weekend.
The driver responded by going after the man, who was attempting to board
another bus, and spitting back at him.
"We are sick and tired of putting up with violence and abuse from a small
number of riders who think they can get away with assaults on bus drivers,"
said Canadian Auto Workers Local 111 President Steve Sutherland. "So we expect
Coast Mountain Bus Company to work with us to reduce violent attacks and that
they will not discipline in any way a driver who reacted understandably to a
vicious assault."
Sutherland said the public has been extremely supportive of the veteran
driver who was spat upon last weekend by a man known to cause trouble on buses
and with aggressive panhandling.
Sutherland said that in December the union posted an ongoing reward of
$2000 for information leading to the conviction of anyone assaulting a bus
driver or other employee and that it will strongly defend any member who is
attacked.
"Drivers are performing a valuable public service and yet more than 200
drivers are being assaulted each year - it has to stop," Sutherland said.
"In the past year we have had over 65 reports of transit operators being
spit at, spit on and spit in the face - all of which are ugly assaults,"
Sutherland said. "And then there were over 70 other physical assaults or
assaults with a weapon, with several drivers injured and some seriously."
CAW 111 Vice-President Jim Houlahan said part of the problem is a severe
shortage of buses leading to overcrowding and pass-ups that leave riders angry
and frustrated, as well as Coast Mountain Bus Company having the most
complicated fare system in North America.
"Transit operators are getting blamed and even attacked for problems that
they have absolutely no control over," Houlahan said. "We need a lot more
buses and a simpler fare system to help at least reduce assaults on drivers."
The 25-year driver is currently on paid leave, Sutherland said.

btw, I didnt think he went to far... just posing the question because some people think he did.
and one thing is, when he walked by he screamed "Anyone else want to spit on the bus driver". In the video they said that was the troubling part.

i would have called him to the front of the bus, while in motion, and advised him i'm terribly sorry for being a dick and that i would like to give him all the money in the coin box, then when he is holding his hands out waiting for the money i would open the door and kick him off!
