Joe Theismann, the NFL quarterback-turned analyst who got his start with the Toronto Argonauts, had some harsh words for his former CFL team on Tuesday after the club signed running back Ricky Williams over the weekend.
"This is a feeble excuse for the Toronto Argonauts to sell tickets," Theismann told Toronto's Fan 590 radio station. "I am embarrassed to have worn that 'A' on my helmet, to think that they would stoop to this level to sell tickets, to bring in someone who is not worthy of playing professional football."
William signed a one-year contract with the Argonauts on Sunday, allowing him to play football while serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy for a fourth time.
"He has insulted professional football players, he has insulted professional football, he has been suspended from the National Football League, he doesn't want to play, he's going to a place where his value will be limited," Theismann continued.
"All that said, Ricky is not a bad kid - he's just done bad things to a sport that I love. And it's a damn shame that the Toronto Argonauts would not show a lot more class and pass on somebody who has been a repeat drug offender. To me, it's an insult to guys who put on the uniform."
Football fans south of the border also got an earful of Theismann's remarks this week, as the former Washington Redskins star made similar comments on ESPN Radio.
"I don't ever want to be mentioned in the same breath as Ricky Williams as a football player," he said. "He's a disgrace to the game. The man doesn't deserve to play football."
Theismann, a fourth-round pick by the Miami Dolphins joined the Argonauts in 1971. He led Toronto to a 10-4 record that year and helped guide the team to the Grey Cup Final where they lost to the Calgary Stampeders. He later signed the Washington Redskins and led them to a Super Bowl victory over the Miami Dolphins in 1983.
Theismann works as a color commentator on ESPN's Monday Night Football NFL telecasts which can be seen live on TSN beginning this September.

Wow Joe Theismann needs to relax its just weed! Its not like he's Barry Bonds break a historic Home Run record or something. As I see it the Argo's have a history of signing trouble maker NFLers so this isn't some publicitity stunt. Of course its going to sell more tickets but it doesn't dispute the fact the Williams is a damn good player.
Definetly good exposure for the CFL! But to my surprise a lot of Americans down south already know about the CFL. Infact hardcore football fans even watch our Grey Cup! They knew more about teh CFL then I did haha
