Puerto Vallarta

Anyone been there? How is it?
Is it similar/better/worse to other places in Mexico?
Thanks!

4 star is okay... for me 5 is too much.. too many preppies... too much service. the little mexican ladies were changing out ashtrays after every cigarette. they never just let you be.

I beg to differ. 5 or 4 star for that matter is exactly that, 5 or 4 star. Better then anything I have stayed in anywhere.

The stars are assigned by an international commitie and are not given out "freely".

Don't open you pie-hole until you know what the call is.

That being said, do Cancun as mention above. There is something for everyone there including the beautiful caribbean, great day trips etc.I beg to differ. 5 or 4 star for that matter is exactly that, 5 or 4 star.

food qualilty must not be included in the star ratings.

ie cuba

4 star is usually okay.. i would only stay at one less if i new i wouldn't be eating there. all i really need is a beach and a bottle

Couldn't have put it better. If you're single looking for good times, Cancun is the way to go. If you have a girlfriend, you'll come home single.

Ok sure what ever, a 5 star rating in North America is different then a 5 Star in Europe, South American and so on. Now to prove my point, go to:

Expedia
Travelocity
Orbitz
SideStep
Hotels.com
AAA
PriceLine
Hotwire
Travelweb

now get a hotel and check the same hotel one every site. Let's say it's a 4 star. One site will have a 4 the other will have a 3.5, 3 sometimes even a 2. If they where all rated the same why are they even changing?

Here is a little artical.

There is no real international hotel ratings system. Ratings of hotels in different countries, if they exist, typically come from the government or quasi-government sources, independent ratings agencies or sometimes the hotel operators themselves.
Therefore, variations between countries' standards naturally exist. For example, in France the government conducts a star rating system ranging from one star for simple accommodation to four for a deluxe hotel. Hotels in Germany and some Scandinavian countries have a one- to five-star rating, which the government reviews every three years, while in Britain the Automobile Association, Royal Automobile Club and English Tourist Board have agreed to a standardized hotel rating system. In South America, hotels are typically granted a star ranking from the government tourism ministry at the date of the hotel's opening, which may not be modified as the property ages.
From the private sector there are the independent ratings guides such as the Michelin Red Guide, England's AA and RAC guides or in the United States the American Automobile Association guide. Others, for example Leading Hotels of the World or Relais and Chateaux, recommend hotels that they have selected to include in their guides that meet their requisite standards. These latter agencies are not entirely independent, since they receive a fee for agreeing to list the particular hotel in their guide and for bookings at the hotel via their reservation service.
The International Standards Organization and the World Trade Organization met in 1998 to jointly discuss harmonizing hospitality standards. However, the delegation got only so far as to recommend that as a first step standards be set in key areas of housekeeping, front office, and food and beverage and nothing was implemented.
Similarly, the European Union addressed the issue at a Forum in December 2002, but no definitive steps have since been taken towards creating a European-wide hotel standards system.

Ok..I believe you. I guess what I was trying to get at is that I have stayed at some Fabulous hotels in Mexico (yes 3 to 5 stars) and most people, if booking packages from Canada will most likely stay at a 4 or 5 star. Most of these 5* hotels are international chains (Melia, Bahia Principe etc) and are usually of very high quality.
Of course if you go on your own (which I have also done) you can just ask to see the room if the hotel is "questionable".

we went a few years ago and stayed in Playa del Carmen Can't remembet the resort but it was amazing - it's in the Mayan Riviera. I've also been over to Puerto Vallarta - that was fun but ...

Mayan Riviera is AMAZING - there's wicked scuba diving, the tombs, pyramids, ruins and stuff were incredable, plus the beaches were A+.
