Well, we have a 2001 Protege5, love that car alot, really fun to drive and handles awesome. It blows in rain, it blows in snow.. the onlything it likes is dry pavement in summer. the motor seems to be good quality, but the transmission blows. There is a TSB/recall on the transmissions for 2001-2003 Protege5's right now and actually mine is in getting a new clutch, pressure plate and fly wheel today. So some small problems, but in all it has been a nice car.

I hear from the guys that autocross miatas and rx-7's that the quality is on part with honda.... but that might just be biased opinions... personally I've not had one so I can't say

it's a great commuter, not much of a project car. Nissan 200SX would make a much better project or Sentra SE-R... can you say SR20DE heck, even a Nissan 2000NX (egg shaped cars). Anyways, that's my humble opinion...

what kinda project car? like what's the ultimate purpose I guess? that's what will determine whether it's a good car or not... reliability-wise it's fine but at that age, it's a gamble with any car.

I like the look of the mx-3 and wanted to drop the KLZE in, plus its a diff car cause it doens't have alot of aftermarket support for it so the mods you do to it are unique.

this is the car that got me hooked.

I've had my Mazda Protege5 (2003) since February of last year I think and I've put about 26,000km on her. Never had a problem once, not even the recall clutch chatter that everyone is calling about (tranny, clutch recall).

For the record, in my line of work we drive our vehicles HARD. Most times you can picture rally on pavement and thats an investigators vehicle. THat should give you an indication as to how they hold up.

Regards,
OK

All the cars mentioned are 2000+ cars and I am sure Mazda has gotten better. I had a 93 Mazda 626 that I bought in 96. The car was great in the first 3 yrs we had it, but it started to show its age after that. Parts for Mazda are typically more expensive than the other Japanese Makers. There is a guy I work with that has a 93 MX 3 and it's just a daily driver with over 250 000 KM. He doesn't seem to have any complaints so far.

I know some guys who have older MX3's around my school, some are rust buckets falling apart with crappy trashed motors, a few others are really nice and run awesome and look good. It all depends on the car.

I used to be a Mazda Fan.... until I owned a Protege5

It was a lemon, replaced the tranny on it 3 times.

To me Mazda = Ford.

Sold the P.O.S. after owning it for a year

loudsubz, that's a very good looking car, but there is also a buttload of money in it. If I had to guestimate, I would say pushing $30K CDN overall... price of car and all the parts pictured.

I have seen some really good looking Neons and other cars too, but you don't see me tripping over myself running to buy them all. If you ask me, a man needs only one car per category:

FF, FR, RR, MR, 4x4, and mini-truck

My friend has a Protege ES (sport package) and it seems to run pretty smoothly. Looks okay (his is Black), and handles pretty well. Of course i'm comparing this to the car he had before, which was a Sunfire lol...so i would say he has improved haha

if you think 26,000 kms is a good indication of reliability, then a Lada Samara is an excellent car too... why don't you buy one of those.

you should know that I'm not just a Honda fanatic... I've spent many hours working on my buddys Protege sedan as well... and I own three different makes now, and have owned every major make out there in the past 8 years ... so why are you making it seem like I only love Hondas??

I know very well, you dont have to keep repeating it, I was asking for opions on the car, some things need to be dropped and left alone, why try and start **** again with another member?

bruno has a point ... if you want to see how reliable a car is look at it's maintenance costs 10 years after it's made when it has tons of km's on it ... take a look at the car at 200,000 KM's and then decide on reliability...

I said nothing about the board member... just that a new car is expected to perform... guess what? LIKE NEW!!! How does that relate to your MX-3??

I only love Hondas... I like a few other mfgs, but I cant afford any of them..

As far as mazda goes.. they have my respect.. I like the old mx6 turbos, and the old RX7's Percidias = junk, and the trucks are basically Ford Rangers .. Mazdas owned by Ford now I beleive, but the engines are by no means Ford built...

My buddy has a 1999 protege 220,000km its a solid car still, all hes replaved is reg maintenence stuff (brakes, filters, oil...) and he blew a cat and EGR(which was expensive)...But It still gets awsome fuel milage and doesnt burn oil... I might also add he is really hard on cars...
