Master of Business Administration

Hhihih everyone!!
I am currently doing my first year BBA at University of Toronto. I want to ask if there is any advantage to getting a master degree after my study (that is to say, if my future justifies the cost and the time needed to get a MBA)? Also, will I get a doctor degree, what kind of jobs other than university professors can I be admitted to? Thanks!!

???

I've asked that question many times to university and college professors and they've said that they have heard of people becoming CEO's, vince presidents, etc of major companies such as TD, Business Depot, etc.

Get the MBA, you won't regret it. Forget the doctorate (it is different), too much time, and you are required to submit a thesis.

An MBA holds alot of weight in any business career you may want. You will most likely be able to move farther within an organization with it and you will start in a higher than normal position (and more pay). Its a win/win situation for the minimal time an MBA takes.

well, you have to be smart about WHEN you get your MBA.... avg age now is like 28 years or maybe even older. That's when it has the greatest impact on your salary. I'm starting BASc Electrical Engineering as a second degree next Sept... I already have a BA in Economics... after I'm done the BASc, I'll have close to 4 years work experience, so I'll get my MBA right after that. I'll be done school by the time I'm 27 hopefully :-\

not necessarily, depends on the school you go to for your MBA. However, most do require like 2 years in a management position as experience.

Thanks guys for the input!!
MBA is so costly though! Does anyone here have a MBA??

BB: Through the conversation you have with the fellow TCC members here, I thought you are over 30 years old?! (Hahahaha, don't take it as an insult!!!)

I am doing my MBA at Laurier now. Without it good luck getting into senior management at a major corporation without it. For instance I know for a fact Scotiabank will not hire any VP's and higher in the future without an MBA.

It is not only a question of new salary....it is also a question of defensive positioning. If there are layoffs you are less likely to go in the first rounds and if you happen to lose your job and you are applying for a new one (and there is more than you applying and they all don't have an MBA)....guess who will likely get it.

What you need to apply (usually)
GMAT test score
Undergrad University Degree with a B average in the final two years
Three letters of reference.

And be prepared to spend around $50,000 for the MBA.

Thankfully IBM is paying for a portion of it.....but I still will have to shell out about $30,000 when all is said and done.

One final note......YOU WILL HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO LIFE FOR A PERIOD OF THREE YEARS.

Hahhha, thanks for the useful input 90EFHB!
Do you know how many people (or percentage) of people (or friends in your network) in Canada holds a MBA as opposed to a regular BBA??

[homer]why you little .... [/homer] haha

Naw, I'm 22... 23 in about 6 weeks.

you can do an intensive one year MBA at Queens for $25Gs last I heard. Also, if you are just starting out with the BBA, consider going to the HBA at UWO...

90EFHB, I didn't know you were going to Laurier... it's a good business school for sure. But their classes are so bunk, I took one acc'g course there and it was like highschool acc'g. I hardly showed up and I had a 90-some avg in that class. Total bullshit. I wasted $500 on that one course and didn't learn a thing

Undergrad in BCOMM or BBA will do you fine for a while....I have a BCOMM and it serves as a good base.....plus you have a better advantage during the MBA over the arts degree folks.

Really get your degree and work in the real world for a bit...the average years of experience is about 8-10years for the better programs. You may find it doesn't interest you to get a MBA or you may not like the business arena and choose something completely different. Besides if you wait there is a better chance of getting your employer to foot some/all the bill.

In regards to fees don't think Dalton dumbass and his parade of Liberals will be able to do anything about the school fees. Laurier, UofT, and many others deregulated their business schools so they are not covered under his proposed tuition freeze.....so they will continue to charge what the market can and will bear.

I don't necessarily like the fact fees for the program are up 100% from 3 years ago, but what can you do.....everything in life has a cost.
