yeah the quality of the make went down

but the laptop itself is fine

i dont have any reliability issues with them and actually the one time we did experience an issue with them was when it still was IBM

The T41 series used to have problems with USB ports blowing.

99CivicSiR 09-Jun-2008 11:08 AM

yea, definately get a Lenovo if you can. I work in IT and all my companies always use their laptops. I would stay away from Toshiba, from my personal experience.

there have probably been like 10,000 of them go in and out of this place over the last 4 years and we've yet to ever experience any real issues with them.

Yes, but they employ you as well. So what your company does isn't necessarily a good idea.

;)

I like to like IBM laptops, from what I saw of Lenovo, I wasn't impressed.

Brands that large companies use are usually the cheap ones.

It's not based on quality, but on cost efficiency.

Why does everything come with a Hitachi harddrive you think?

If you can save $20 per laptop, and you have 10,000 of them, you're going to go with the cheaper one.

For a single purchase, I would buy something better.

Just my two cents.

shlammed 09-Jun-2008 02:58 PM

sorry but your big company theory doesn't apply here

we once thought of switching to another laptop and benchmarked the lenovo's against about 10 other models and decided to stick with it with things like size and weight also taken into consideration not just strictly performance.

shlammed 09-Jun-2008 03:03 PM

for a single purchase i mgiht go with something else too but in no way do i think Lenovo's are crap.

we actually used to have dell like 4 years ago, before my time. and then remote users were having major issues with them, and then company tested HP, Toshiba, IBM, and end up getting IBM, and beside minor issues, here and there they have been running solid.

why not test asus?

the most trusted motherboard manufacturer?

shlammed 09-Jun-2008 03:30 PM

we tested pretty much a model from almost every manufacturer out there

I was not confident in LG, but I just recently(2 months ago) bought a new laptop for home use, got it from future shop, it was recomended to me by a sales staff over all other brand names like Sony,Hp, Toshiba, Compaq. The sales staff took me through every detail and i spent a good 2 hours learning about graphics cards, core2 Duo processors, on demand memory and such. I ended up buying an LG laptop, with Intel Core2 Duo 1.93 X 2 = 3.86 ghz speed, ATI Radeon Xpress Graphics card, Windows Vista, Dual layer super multi/blu ray/DVD multi-recorder/RW DVD-R DL/, built in smart web cam, finger recognition password, bluetooth, s-video tv out, 5 in 1 card reader, 4GB memory, Express Card, Intelligent update, international warranty, 400GB disk space. And a whole bunch of crazy plug in sockets i have no clue what they do, it even comes with a remote control

And a very good review to back up its reliability, all for $1,200 on sale. Best Lap top i have ever owned so far.

I bought this laptop because i was looking for the best 14inch or smaller gaming and business laptop under $2000.

I watch full length movies on it downloaded from the net, play really high graphic games, watch tv on it, even started using it for my office work, and it is very fast for a wireless internet laptop.

You should get DELL if you are looking for a laptop just to work on and i have Dell as well for work, for 800 you can get a very decent Dell lap top for work.

thanks for all the responses so far. I have an old IBmthinkpad myself and yes, it is solid.

Anyone have any issues with dell batteries? What about their screens? I heard that they have frequent incidents of failed pixels?

I agree with that! It all depends what you need it for, what you plan on adding to it and how much you use it!

My Dell laptop is now going on 3 years - the LCD recently blew! $800 to repair -never repaired it, just hooked up an external monitor, grabbing a new desktop for school for September.
As for their batteries, get the extended battery pack! But do not do what I did and keep it plugged in all the time - HA HA! Don't ask!

As much as I complain about my Dell, it is a decent machine, I just wore it to the ground!

99CivicSiR 09-Jun-2008 08:50 PM

I did a hardware evaluation for my company between Lenovo, Dell, and HP. And we ended up going with Lenovo again.

slowem2 09-Jun-2008 09:35 PM

I've had an apple macbook for two years and I haven't looked back to windows since. Every new machine now comes with Windows Vista and in my opinion it is the slowest operating system ever. If you're willing to up your budget a little bit I'd get an apple.

My boss just bought an ASUS V2S. Very nice laptop I must say. Very solid, sleek and durable.

Its $$ and the screen is small but it seems to be worth it so far. Only problem is the bloatware loaded and the crappy Vista that has caused is to run the recovery disc once already in under a week of use lol.

Its funny how everyone has a different opinion on different makes/models. I used to think HP/Compaq were crap but my gf's HP 17" has been fine with not a single issue, and it had less Vista issues out of the box than other bundled OS I have tried on different machines.

My vote goes to whatever you like after trying it out :D

compaq/hp is garbage had mine take a **** on me 2 weeks after warranty was up, gateway isnt the best either, overall out of the 4 laptops ive had, I must say Dell is hands down my favorite. If I were you I would look at the Dell Inspiron 1525.

when it comes to name brands, most of it is bias.

this is especially true to harddrives.

seagate, maxtor, and western digital.

i have had vista on mine for a while, i'm reverting back to XP. i was at a client site trying to connect to a IP device for an hour until I asked to use the customers laptop which had XP and it worked instantly. That was the final blow. I'm going to ignore vista, I don't care if as an IT person, I should learn it.

It's almost as stupid as using OSX.

ya vista is worthless for the most part, thats why i keep an xp laptop for work and a vista one for home (too lazy to downgrade it)
