Laptop

Hey guys,

I am looking to get a new laptop but am a newbie when it comes to laptops. The use for the laptop will be " general". Meaning that i am not necessarily looking a a gaming computer or one with wicked graphics etc. etc. Just a decent, fast and reliable laptop that will hopefully not get outdated too quickly.

My budget is about $800 (<--- is that ok?) and was wondering if you guys can direct me to some must have things and any decent places to shop in the GTA.

I am pretty sure that i wont be going to FS, Bestbuy or the big box retailers.

What about dell laptops?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Lenovo is a great laptop ... but be ready to spend .... Dell is a good alternative and cheaper ... we have 5 dells at work and one lenovo ... both are great from my experience ...

and buy online ... www.dell.ca

or the lenovo site

We have lenovo's and Dells here at work and I can agree with most up above that they have worked great. Lenovos are solid/can take a good beating and still hold up with their performance. Dells are reliable and are backed by pretty good service if you ever need it. If you do consider a laptop from a big box retailers I have used many HPs and Toshibas and would recommend those amongst the others, I have never had a problem with them and they are easy to maintain and service yourself. Also they are very affordable for your needs.

Hope this helps.

it all depends on your preference what your requirements are... you need it for school ... game or simply just internet browsing ?????

get one that uses a video card, and not on-board video.

Regardless of gaming or not, it will make a difference.

I'm an ASUS fan boy.

don't get Sony or Lenovo. They're sh1t.

HP/Compaq are fine. Toshiba and dell are okay as well.

I got a 13" ASUS for $1400.

If you don't have any hook ups, you're likely best off going to Bestbuy or Futureshop and not getting an extended warranty. Look online, they sometimes have $200 off.

dell.ca also has decent deals pretty often.

You can get a price off of dell, find a dell dealer and ask them to beat it.

dell dealer can always offer better pricing than dell. it's an agreement to increase distribution of dell hardware to home markets.

Lenovo is ****?

there have probably been like 10,000 of them go in and out of this place over the last 4 years and we've yet to ever experience any real issues with them.

I'll admit that the quality of the laptop itself (the make of it) seemed to drop a bit after IBM sold the unit, but they're still great.

We use the T-series and X-series in particular.

all desktop hardware on bay st here is lenovo. no issues in over five years for me

R3dLine 09-Jun-2008 10:13 AM

the Lenovo T-60 and 61 model laptops are great machines, only problem that I have ever had with a Lenovo was after a while my batter completely died and would not hold any charge, so if someone kicked the power my laptop would shut off, but Lenovo replaced the battery without a hassle :) I currently own the R60 for the past 2 years and I'm getting the T-60 or T-61 in September. I take it to and from school/class every day, it gets turned on/off and opened/closed half a dozen times in a day, everyday, and let me say that it can with stand alot of wear and tear and still maintain a great level of reliability.

shlammed 09-Jun-2008 10:20 AM

yea we have T61 and T61P's right now and also X61's

1999blksi 09-Jun-2008 10:26 AM

I use the T71XP
I love it

fingolfin 09-Jun-2008 10:44 AM

though I know alot of you know this

stay away from MDG
they have good customer service, but my friends laptop have been in the shop 4 times for warranty issues in its first 6 months.

3 times because of poor build quality (speakers stopped working once, switch to turn screen on stopped working twice)

lenovo's are okay, but original IBM laptops were way better in quality and reliability.

ever since lenovo start making laptops for IBM quality went down a bit, but still pretty solid laptops.

T61 are great for sure, we have them for work :)

but i still love my R52 from school solid laptop
