I'm pretty sure your IP address can be changed since that's not determined by your network card. Now your MAC address... that's a different story -- that IS determined by your network card.

Mac address is determined by the network card. IP is determined on the connection. I haven't hear of it being possible to change the ip address manually. Normally my isp will change mine over time.

If your connection requires you to get a dynamic ip (from a dhcp server) you cannot change your ip.
You can assigned yourself a static ip if you have a network with a gateway that gets the dynamic ip from a dhcp server.
I'm sure there's programs on the net that can mask your IP address when you're surfing if that's what you're looking for.
Hope I made sense.

If you are using broadband (cable or dsl) then u have a static IP address. You can call your ISP and get them to change your IP add for you. As far as I know you cannot manually change your IP add yourself.
If you are dial up then you should techinically not get the same ip address.
Oh yeah... changing your network card will not change your IP address. That I know for sure...
hope this helps.

Thats funny, I wish I could get a static address, dsl and cable are ALWAYS dynamic addresses, you could only get a static if you have a business account and its gonna cost you 80 a month.
it is impossible to change your IP, it is given to you by your ISP dhcp servers, if you could change it there is no way for them to monitor your network bandwith usage or any other security features including diagnostics when calling for support. The only way to change your IP is if you change your NIC or connect through usb adap. by doing so the dhcp servers would have to bind a new ip with that new mac the card has, connecting to a router will not change your WAN IP, it will clone the mac of your nic and assign private addresses withing your home network. Then and only then you can assign static addresses to your LAN in the range of 10.0.0.1 to 10.255.255.254 and 172 addresses and 192.168 addresses. At rogers we usually give addresses starting with 24 or **

I have a cable modem and it's changing from time to time... I check my router often.... anyways if your on a private network (those with 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) then you can do as you please with your network topology

yea...if you're static just call your provider and tell em someone
's packeting you or something and they'll change the address for you...the only thing you can do manually is re-connect and get a new dynamic IP if you're not static...you have no control over what ip you get...if this was the case the internet wouldn't exist...that's why there are organizations that control the distribution of IP addresses

network card's have nothing to do with IP addresses...network cards have Media Access Control addresses which are burned into the card at the factory and are permanent. Cogeco CAN change it...they are your service provider and they hold the rights to a certain amount of IP adresses for their customers to use. It wouldn't be hard for them to assign you an available address from that pool.

I think you are very ignarant. I work at rogers so dont tell me you can call us and get a static address. NO SERVICE PROVIDER WILL GIVE YOU A PRIVATE IP. I dont know where u hear this from, you have to pay extra for a private address and thats through business only you banana. Learn your stuff first then talk all you kluks!
And the only time we unbind modems is for network abuse or non payment, and all unbinding does is releases your ip from the headend modems, when they rebind it gives the same ip you have before. It will only change if you change your Network card.

just cuz you work at Rogers you dont have to act all high and mighty like you own the place. you're just a worker there.
I know that rogers dont give out static ip's to personal users.
i didnt think that the original poster wanted a private nor static ip, just wanted to change it to something else. If he did then he can disregard all of my posts.
and if you're gonna call someone ignorant please spell it correctly.

I look at this thread and i laugh....the amount of misinformation being stated is almost comical....
Yes you can mask your IP so it looks like someone else.....
You can also mask your adapters IP address.....
in the world of IT anything is possible with time and money.
finally
Would I broadcast that I work for Rogers anywhere in their IT shop?.....Not likely. Imagine working at a place that uses/used to use the password "athome" for all their routers and used AIX 2.1 for their DNS.....(when the rest of the world was running 4.3.
Its no wonder they had to bring in Cisco consultants to clean up their mess.
