Import Duties?
#3
What if the items that I want shipped are pretty big... IE a set of wheels?
For a brand new set of rims, can I still tell the sender to declare them as a "gift" and get them to realistically understate the value?
Do you know what the perccentage tarriff is, if I do have to pay tax?
I need to know b/c I gotta figure out iif it's even worth buying from the US....

depends how u ship it, fedex and ups = tax + brokerage
USPS with item marked gift = nothing I've ever paid
Best bet united states postal service airmail marked gift, value under 20 bucks

Gifts are only duty free up to $60 in value. And remember that if you understate the value, you can only buy insurance up to the stated value.
No matter how its shipped you will be charged gst and pst.
If you ship USPS then you are charged a $5 handling fee.
If UPS or Fedex etc... the handling (aka brokerage) fee can be calculated by going to there site, on average say $40 but this depends on the declared value.
Next is duty. If its not made in north america it most likely (some countries and/or products are exempt) will be charged import duty. Call CCRA (canada customs) and they will tell you.
Finally you pay for shipping the item ofcourse.
Most products can be found competitively priced in Canada, just look around for shops with good prices, ie. tcc affiliites where you can get discounts, [shameless plug] I also will be carrying alot more brands in the next little while [/shameless plug]
However there are some things you can get cheaper from the US, like a Greddy turbo kit.
Also remember, warranty service will be much harder if you buy from the states compared to local, if you should need it.

Hey Astroboy,
since I know you import your stock from your US distributor... how much should it cost for a set of wheels to be shipped.
On Ebay I see guys asking for up to 140 USD to ship rims? Are they gouging the buyer?
Also, does purchasing insurance mean that the item will be fully protected from damage and/or loss?
I heard that insurance only guarantees against damage, but if the item is lost in transit, insurance doesn't cover it. Is this true?

Actually I am importing from myself from the US
You have to remember it is much cheaper for businesses to ship say UPS than an individual because of the volume much cheaper rates can be obtained. $140 US to ship 4 sets of rims only is very high for US to Canada (assuming this is ground shipping). If you know the size and weight of the package you can do a quote at most shippers' websites. Your insurance coverage will depend on the shipper being used, so you would have to find that out first.

Thanks ... very informative.
It's hard to get quotes on from the 'NEt because they need to know where the originating state/town is... On Ebay, that information isn't always known, because the selller will only say that he's somewhere in the states... and he gives a blanket quote on shipping to Canada.
