I Tested a Future Shop Employee

So I decided to go into Future Shop yesterday to shop for some blank Cd's and while i was there i thought i would take a peak at some Digital Cameras. When i was browsing, I over heard the sales rep at the counter giving a run around to an innnocent shopper who wasnt very technically inclined and the bastard sold the poor lady a $600 digital camera.

So i decided to test him. I told him I was in the market for a 1 mega pixel camera, because Ive heard they are the best on the market right now and that my budget was $500. I was playing the ignorant shopper, and i think i played it well.

So i asked to see this nice Sony Digital Camera, listed at about $499. Now, im pretty technically inclined and if any of you are techies out there you know that DPI stands for Dots per inch, for those of you who dont know, this is the measure of resolution of printers and other hard copy producing peripherals. So back to my story, I go on to ask the "digital camera expert" at Future shop..."What is the DPI rating on this camera?" He goes on to tell me that the DPI on this Sony camera is the top on the market and that it produces the best pictures available to date. I look at him and shake my head and ask him what DPI stands for. He tells me its how the company rates the pictures that the camera produces. I told him thanks and walked away...I cant believe how stupid people are and what people will do to make a sale.

I wont disclose the location of this future shop store just because I usually have good experiences with them...

If I were you, I would have asked him why he ripped off that lady?

What a bastard.

ya, but no place is immune to something like this... i was at a honda dealer the other day... well like 6 months ago, and i saw some guy telling some old lady that she needed all this work done when she really didn't, and she ended up getting like 6g's worth of work done on her 2001 civic...

it's sad that ppl do that tho... esp to ppl that don't know what they're talking about, you go somewhere where you expect to trust the sales person and they end up ripping you off...

Hey now, I've been in sales for the last 5 years of my life.

I may be a ***** at times, but I think I also have a reputation for being a fair person.

Guys that rip people off like that aren't sales people, they are "shiesters" they lie to you to get your money.

Real sales people provide good information and help guide you to making a good decision.

YES, when I was in commissioned sales, I firmly believed that product knowlege, and being able to demonstrate features & benefits was what lead to sales and more importantly, happy customers.

I was frowned upon when I was working at Future Shop because I decided to focus on technical sales... I was sick of seeing people walk out with **** they really didn't need and $500 useless warranties... I can't stand that place.

it's also a bit on the customer to make good buying decisions... ie do some research before pulling their wallet out.

I agree. I actually worked at Future Shop part time last year, and they do put you through test to make sure that you know your products. And they radomly test you every week (at least where I worked), and if you don't know your ****, (including what is on sale in the flyer by heart), they pull you off the floor or freeze your sale's number. Oddly enough, I worked in the Communications department where they sell Digital Camera's. That guy had no clue. Even if the person was non technical, telling the truth would still sell the camera.

Another senario is, if that old lady later on has someone that she knows that would tell her the truth within 30 days, she can return the camera and buddy gets the commision taken away.

It's all good when you make lots of sales, but you gotta make sure you don't have a high return. You start telling lies, it's gonna come bite ya back in the ***.

I love going in to get more memory for my lazer printer (yes they have upgradeable memory) and asking for a price on memory for my bubble Jet Printer. anyone in the know knows that bubble jets don't have memory ... and are directly controled by the computer. I get a kick when they look through catalogs for 1/2 hour and then call suppliers to find out bubble jets don't have memory ... last time I pulled this stunt I cracked up as he told me (ussually I wait till I'm outside)

remember though with futureshop and business depot etc.... they all only have sales men in the stores technical stuff is done off site....

Thats funny... And Gatherer.. thats not true. I work at a staples and all of the 'salesmen' in the electronic department are a+ certified or equivelant (with the exception of 1 or 2) and we all do tech work when we have the chance. We aren't on commision either. If someone asks me a question that i cannot answer, i will go find out for them. Im not gonna give them a run around or anything stupid. But just so you know that most staples have several a+ guys and we actually also have 2 MCSE's, and one RedhatServer Admin cert. guy. We do also have a tech from toronto who is all of the above but he only comes to the store 1 time a week.

Ha this reminds me of when I went into Bestbuy yesterday to buy my bro a cheap digicam. I bought this samsung 2mp camera with 8mb of internal memory. When he was ringing me up the guy asked if I wanted a memory card cause if I didnt buy one I wouldnt be able to transfer the pictures from the internal memory onto my computer and that everyone who doesnt buy one comes back after complaining they cant get the pictures off the camera. So Im thinking, "yea alright I'll waste my money buying it from you guys when theyre on ebay for 30 bucks". So I go home and hook up the camera and of course the guy was wrong, I could copy the pictures off the internal 8mb (all 10 pictures lol). I thought that bestbuy would have a lil more knowledgable workers than futureshop seeing how theyre not paid on commission, but I guess not. Oh well, least I know what Im doing.

Yeah.. There has been a few pranks, but mainly from employee calling the store to pretend to be a dumb customer, they have got me one or two times. Some days are better then others though.

future shop is known for bs, IMO, best buy does the same thing, i tried testing one of their employees when I was getting a new printer, and they didnt know ne thing either, i already had a scanner and he said that the printer that i was gonna get wouldnt be compatible with it b/c it was "newer", he was trying to get me to buy the more expensive "all in one" but i said thanks and got my printer only

The moral to the story is do your hmk when you are looking to buy something.

BTW- less then 20% of warranty's are actualy claimed.
Hence why I never buy the extended warranty.
