For the original poster. Follow the proper process. Talk to your boss about it. If you lost a girl over money she may not have been a keeper in the first place.

whatever you do, don't pour brake cleaner on his car that will ruin his paint big time.
seeking legal course is the best option.
my friend's boss screwed him out of money, or tried to, my friend went to the labour board and got everything he was owed.
if it's not enough money to warrant that amount of effort, then it's not worth the risks of getting a stupid charge, a fine, and possibly a record over something small.

maybe take pictures of his kids going to school and show them to him, put them away, and ask for your money.
