Fido Cell phones

I'm thinking of switching to Fido(from Telus) because they have some good rate plans. I know that Fido is known for bad reception but now that they are part of Rogers has it improved? I can put up with lower quality reception ( a little lower anyway) and I figure I'll buy a better phone. Anyone have any feedback(no crap!) Thanks

Fido has improved a fair bit now that Rogers has bought them out.

I dont know if fido still offers the $5/month shared Rogers network. If it does, then just add that to any plan and get a phone with 850MHz, you should be good to go.

If your using the phone as your main line, I would suggest going to rogers becuase there reception is pretty good. Ive been using an 850MHz phone for the past 3.5 years and no complaints at all.

Phone wise, I would suggest getting an unlocked phone and using it on Fido so your not tied down to any contracts. (Check out howardforums.com for new/used cell phones). If you want to buy something brand new, I would suggest Nokia or Sony Ericsson or Motorola.

Nokia makes some pretty good phones, great battery life and great reception. I would suggest the Nokia 6020 or the SE Z500.

Hope this helps.

(I used to work in a Fido dealer. Rogers networks run on 1900/850 MHz where as Fido runs only 1900MHz.)

Go with the 6020 or the T610.

I have heard about some problems with the V180. And I would never use an LG phone.

great info, thanks. The phone is not a main line for me. It's basically just for me and my girl to talk and use when we are together (were always together!) It's not used that often. I'm considering spending the extra cash on an unlocked phone so i dont have a contract but I dont want to have any phone problems or im screwed!

Whats wrong with LG? I have an LG6070 with Telus and have had no problems at all.
I guess I could try out the Fido network and if it really sucks just add the rogers service. All the other companies have some outragous proce plans

Unlocking your phone wont affect the service in any way, it just allows you to use the phone on any GSM network. (It adds value to the phone IMO.)

I used an LG back 5 years ago on Telus, and it was trash. Ever since then, never used an LG.

Find out if the rogers service add on is available with Fido at the moment.

I know in the city Fido is great, but in the outskirts its a problem.

so I can have my LG6070 unlocked? do you know how much that may cost? That would be cheaper to do then buy a new phone right now (although I was looking for a camera phone!)

Telus is CDMA, Fido/Rogers is GSM. (Two different networks)

You cant interchange CDMA/GSM. If you had an old fido phone and wanted to use it on rogers you can get it unlocked and use it. Works vice versa as well.

Motorola V635 is a great phone. I was tied up with getting that one or the S710a by Sony Ericsson. I chose the SE one becuase I was getting a better price, and I liked the styling.

I think Bell actually has better coverage. I think your getting reception in your basement because is close to a reception tower.

As for the Nokia. The 6020 is a great phone to pick up from Fido. All nokia's are known for their long lasting batteries.

Even though I think Bell has better coverage I'm with Fido for 2 main reasons.

1) I prefer GSM over CDMA any day
2) I hate Rogers, and refuse to use anything that says rogers on it.

Fido does have great CS though.

Here's my phone. Samsung E630 on Fido.

Yeah bell is ****. I used to be with them when I had my phone hooked up. I was on the $25/month evenings/weekends free and 50 mins during the day/week.. my monthly bills generally came out to $35/month with their bullsh!t charges, even a few times they added features that I didn't even ask for and my bill came out to over $45/month.. I called and complained and I didn't have to pay for it, but its a pain in the *** and they scam all their customers like that.

The only way this could happen if they were working on the reception towers in your area. Once finished, the reception will be even better than before.

I left Bell a few years ago because of that crap. I heard from an ex employee that they would just go into accounts and add services so they would get their bonuses and then go back into the accounts and deactivate the services!

Thanks for all the input guys..

really? Personally I've noticed that Fido has improved tremendously over the years. Since Fido/Rogers merged networks, I've found better reception, at least for me.

Usually in a basement at one of my friend's houses where I get used to get no signal...now it's like full signal.

The only knock on the system is when it automatically switches between the Fido/Rogers network...it'll always ask me to update the new time...(I should probably turn of the auto update feature for the clock on my phone though)
