1.) Router
2.) 2 NIC in the Desktop machine
If you had a router you could hook up the modem to the router, then the wireless to the router and share it that way, or hook up the internet to the desk on one of the NIC, and on the other hook the wireless to it and share the internet fromt hat comp.
this is a good site

Here is the whole project layout, just go to Best Buy to grab everything you needed:
In this scenario, I use All linksys product, Why? best bang for the bucks (I personally don't like SMC):
Hardware:
1. Linksys 4 ports Wireless Router (BEFW11S4) $169
2. Linksys Wireless USB network adaptor (WUSB11) $99
or Wireless Compact USB Adapter (WUSB12)
note: it is up to your decision to pickup 1 or 2 adaptors. If you are going to place your router near by your desktop, I suggest to connect it with cable directly to save some $$$
3. 2 CAT-5 Cables (6 - 10 FT)
Connection between router and modem. Just follow the instruction that comes with the router.
Software setup: very straight forward, again, the linksys manual will guide you through the whole project!
Estimate cost for the project:
Parts
169 + 99 + 12 = 280
Tax
280 x 1.15 = 322
Result: Pretty good overall, but the network transmission speed is 11Mbps Max. Some area in the basement may not working too well!

Mugen C

I wouldn't choose wireless. I think its terrible. If you run it near lights, tv, flourescent lights, you transmission will be toast. Just giving you a heads up. I just took the Cisco Networking Course this year. I know alot. Ask me some questions if you want.

I'd recommend a wireless linksys hub (not a router) a second NIC for your desktop, an extra ethernet cable and windows internet connection sharing (need win 98SE or better)
if you want I'll set it all up ... so long as you have time during the day on weekdays or are free on sundays... setup cost = free... you just have to pay for parts and PM me...

The new 5G stuff as well as second and third Gen 2.4 Ghz devices have almost eliminated those early complaints...
I have deployed several secure Wireless networks in the last couple of months...
Mugen C is right on the money if you need to keep cost down...
Good advice...

First Gen linksys pci adapters did this...
I haven't seen one in awhile..
Basically you instal the PCI adapter and the PCMCIA car slides into the adapter...
I think this might even be a discontinued part...
Look around...
Someone might have older inventory...
Note: This specific configuration had interference problems when I tested it about 2 years ago...
With a linksys router...
I found the antennas on the 1st Gen Linksys PCMCIA card's to be weak at best..
USB adapters are the cheapest route...

I disagree with 2 rice for u, the Linksys BEFW11s4 is a great wireless router u can use it with any device including dlink, smc and other wireless adapters which all carry 802.11 technology. I have one a floor down, through walls, i have a portable phone in the same room and even when im on my cell phone i still get minimun 85% signal strength, u have 12 channels to chose from, usually 1, 6, and 11 are the best ones. but in this case i would just use a wireless switch because of the fact your using high speed internet, if u were u using cable then i would go with a router, but save the money and grab a switch, a switch will filter your traffic, basically its smarter and faster than a hub. u can use a hub too if u want. on your pc u use a NIC(basic one, cat 5) and the laptop a wireless pcimcia card.

I have 8 computers at home. 1 being a Windows 2000 Server, 2 being laptops and 5 being desktops. The 2 laptop and 2 of the desktops are connected to the network at 11Mbps while the rest of the network are connected at 100Mbps through ground wire. An excellent setup, never had any problem with the wireless network. Make sure you encrypt the content of the wireless network, my next door neighbor told me once he could see my entire network through his computer.

i have the old one power adapter, its just burnt, because it was from an european country, and i was using a power step-down converter
specs are:
-C+
Primary: 230v ~ 50Hz 305 mA
Secondary: 13.5V --- 2.5A 33.75VA
model: tead-66-132500V
the amp just says it needs 13.5v DC IN
