Any high end place will give you a certification of cut, carat and clarity. The information should also provide the stone's origin and suggested value (some places offer that/opinional appraisal)

Buddah there's no such thing as an 18kt Platinium band, there is no kt to platinium... only gold... maybe it was white gold, or just platinium

No problem. I'd suggest coming up with a budget before you buy...then you can play with the opinions (4C's). Although mine was on the more expensive scale being 13 g's, color and clarity play an important role I believe in a stone's worth. If you play with those 2 C's, I'm sure you can find a suitable stone for your future fiancee in terms of size and whatnot. That site is really helpful. I suggest studying it before you walk into a jewelry store with the intent to purchase. Good luck bud. And congradulations.

*EDIT*
My mistake. It's 18kt white gold as per the little certification card for the ring. It's not platinum. But, still well worth the money.

I've seen women with large diamonds that look cloudy and like a chunk of glass. Imho, it's nicer to have something clear and brilliant, and perhaps a little smaller, in a beautiful setting, than some huge rock that looks like a piece of cut glass.
