![Question](https://www.civicforumz.com/tcc/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I plan on getting another hard drive for storage since I'm running out of space on my current one. What I want to know is that I'm going to ghost everything on my current HD to the new one. By doing this will it make the new HD bootable or do I need to format it and make it bootable? If that's the case, what are the commands again to format and make it bootable?
Any other suggetions on how to do this properly is appreciated.
Thanks

Use symantec ghost. It will copy the old drive, make it bootable and resize the partition to a larger size.
What motherboard do you have?
Make sure it can support a larger drive.
Some older mobo's can't read the mbr on larger IDE HD's.
What file sytem is the old drive FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HPFS.
Please advise.

Oh god
Oh man, I just bought a new 40 gig for my computer not too long ago. I wanted to ghost everything over too. But it's way more trouble than it's worth. So i installed windows xp on the 40 gig and started all over again. I hardly access anything from the old harddrive anymore. Just use it to store mp3's, pictures, videos, etc. All my programs i reinstalled onto the new 40 gig.

That's right, norton ghost will create the exact image of your existing drive, once it's completed, disconnect your old drive, connect your new drive and reconfigure your CMOS to match the spec.(given you aren't using auto drive detect) of your new drive. Done...
If you are using NT, W2K...it will be running chkdsk automatically on its first boot.
as 94EG6HB suggested, ensure that your motherboard supports Larger Hardrive (30GB or above)
BTW, to make yourself feel even safer...if you have a CD-Burner, backup all the critical files beforehand....just in case of any Hardware Failure during Ghosting process.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let us know!

Wow. So many replys so fast. Thanks guys. I'm running 98 on a ECS K7S5A motherboard. I have Norton Gost 2001. The new drive will be a Western Digital 40GB ata/100. Old drive is a Quantum 20GB ata/66 FAT 32.
Basically all I want to do is ghost everything over to the 40, use that as my primary (bootable with the OS) and wipe everything off of the 20 and use that as storage.
So when I ghost everything over to the 40 with NG, it will also make it bootable? No going to command prompt and typing fdisk /s/b or somehitng like that?
Man everytime I type "bootable" I end up spelling it "boostable" HAHAHAH

Thanks man. One last thing, after everything is working on the 40, I use fdisk at the command prompt to wipe everything out on the 20 and then I can use it for storage? Nothing else needed to "ready" the 20 for storage?

Yep, you can just fdisk the older drive then format it. Make sure you pick the best File format for your application (ie: FAT16, FAT32, etc..).
You should also check about which channels you put the drives on. When transferring info from one IDE drive to another it's best to have them on seperate channels. If you think you're gonna be burning off one drive more than the other you should put that drive and the burner on seperate channels.
