City of Windsor

Hey, so I have been applying to Universities and whatnot for next year when I leave my victory lap in high school, and one of my decisions was to apply at U of Windsor. So I was wondering if any of you guys have been down there before, and could tell me some first hand experience you had there? I would like to know how the honda/civic scene is there, and any members from on TCC there?

my dad always said going to windsor was for people who couldnt get into good unis, and it was the armpit of canadian universitites. I dont know how true this is because ive never been to their university. But i wouldnt go there because they are so close to detroit and i dont want to get killed by wannabe americans.

Windsor is dirty and the unemployment rate is through the roof. Not sure about the civic scene there. The university is alright but there are much better options.

If you have your heart set on Windsor than we really can't talk you out of it, but I'd use that as a fall back... aim high and worse comes to worse you can always go to UofWindsor, I'd start with UofT (downtown) and then trail down from there. Civic scene... not too sure, had a buddy come from there and he knew he s*** about civics but it could have just been him kinda thing.

And our mayor won the garbage strike, unlike the retard david miller.

Really, I know many ppl from Windsor that moved to TO and love it, and I know just as many who hate it. It's a matter of personal preference.

As for the Civic scene, it's not well organized... there are a few cars but we don't hang out together cuz, well frankly we have better things to do. The "scene" shouldn't factor into whether you move here or not.

As for the school, who gives a crap? I've learned it makes no difference where you actually go to school. I went to Waterloo for undergrad, U of T for MBA, and now I'm back in my home town for graduate studies. Because, it simply doesn't matter...

Windsor is not dirty, Its actually the opposite. The U is a nice campus, as for level of education i think the whole Ontario education system is a mess and as pointed out if you have to count on where your education is from you probably have other problems to worry about. I actually feel more comfortable walking downtown Detroit than downtown T.O. oh and for you information 8 mile isn't any worse than some places in T.O. Best thing is you can afford to see a hockey team play and win. Not much of a club scene if thats what your into. Let me know if you need more info....

I live in London. I was refering to the area down by the U. It's the older part of town and it is run down in that area. This is more than likely going to be the part he lives in. Not to say the whole town is dirty, maybe that was unfair. They do have a nice river front walking path near the U aswell.

OIC, ya ok London is not bad... even though there are ghetto areas of London as well. I lived there by the college, what's it called... Fanshawe or something.

Yes, the west side of Windsor is where the hood is, but it's just broke ppl and welfare families, not criminals and thugs. But it's really cheap to live in Windsor, so it's not as if you have to live in the hood (but again even if you did, it's not unsafe). Only street to worry about really is Pillette, but you wouldn't go there anyways unless you're looking to score $2 hookers or crack.

Anyways, the real question should be, what are you looking to take in school? What are your career goals?

Thanks for the replies, you guys have cleared up some things I was thinking of. So it's like Toronto but a whole lot level safer?

And Bbarbulo, I'm looking into Mechanical Engineering with the Automotive Option program they offer there. My main career goal is to get a mechanical engineering degree and to be working in the automotive industry. I have taken the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (basically first year college course) in high school in Automotive Mechanic, and passed with 96%, and I have been taking all the related courses that is required for mechanical engineering like Chemistry, Physics, and Calculus. I don't plan living in Windsor after I finish University though and move into the west like BC or Alberta.

I'm not set on Windsor though yet, I'm visiting the actual city and campus in March. I also applied to UOIT and McMaster University, and I'm leaning towards Mac first.

ok well i'm not sure what you plan to do out west with a MechEng degree w/ automotive option. unless you work at western star (think their HQ is in British Columbia and they make big rig trucks) or a farm equipment manufacturer (of which I don't know any).

think more clearly about your career options as they relate to where you want to live. like you wouldn't aspire to be a snow removal expert in mexico

I'm thinking of working out in the west in dealerships like Honda, Mazda or Toyota to gain experience in the automotive field. Then travel out to Europe and work with automotive industries in designing/improving modern automobiles.

windsor aside from having a university really has NOTHING else to offer except that unless you are an older retired like person that lives in the super nice outskirts on the river...no jobs, no culture unless you consider "white trash" and wiggers a culture. downtown is "cool" for a week but the same old bars and bar trash and 19yr olds from michigan trashed on canadian beers becomes old way fast...hey, the casino is nice though!

oh and you gotta love mid day traffic which consists of 10km of transport trucks lined up to cross the bridge!

the campus is mediocre at best, the dorms are crappy and old and I hope you dont mind the "international" students using the quad as their own personal cricket field.

on the plus side, the new tiger stadium and ford field are right downtown now and joe louis arena isnt too far from that so sporting events are all nice and close...oh and midnight duty free booze runs are a bonus too.

and when school is out in the summer...its super lame as nobody is around other than the locals and the few summer schoolers...

save windsor as a last resort especially if you have no real good reason to go there

I don't plan staying there during summer. And it's still not first choice on my list of universities. And thanks for the info, just the info I needed.

Thanks for posting in here guys, just wanted to know what Windsor is like.

now that i think about it, this isn't far from the truth. def need good friends around. it's not the sort of city you go 'meet people'. most ppl at the university are locals who didn't want to go elsewhere, or international students. you don't want to be friends with international students, and locals don't need 'new' friends. so it'd be tough for an out-of-towner.

cynikal, the party scene is not anymore. the strong dollar (weak US) and the new passport rules have all but eliminated the american crowd.
