I use a Canon SD750. No complaints. For your price range, there are tons of cameras. The higher models are not always better. Often its just the reviewers opinion. I find that some of the higher end cameras are not as easy to use if you just want something simple.

SD probably refers to the type of memory card it uses.

Canon for quality all the way! they are normally a little more expensive but worth it.

I think a really big question for all this is what are you going to be using it for?

There are even a few cameras from Olympus that are water/shock/temperature proof. They are a bit more money though.

Maybe, but you can get them wet, drop them etc without any issues. Under certain circumstances like at the beach or in the snow where a normal camera might get damaged, picture quality might not be a huge issues.

Canon even has one, the D10. It looks pretty gay though.

No it doesn't. "The SD range is Canon's ultra compact and 'fashionable' line of cameras. They are designed as point & shoot type cameras and only have very limited manual control. They look great, have cool features and take very good quality images." (via: I'm looking at the Canon SD line.....? - Yahoo! Answers )

Canon Powershot SD1200IS BlacksPhoto - Product (Canon Powershot SD1200IS (Blue))
This is what I would go for, doesn't have to be blue. I found it at black's but you can probably find it cheaper somewhere else or on sale.

I generally really like Canon. They make great compact cameras. They're built well, and have a good optical system. I prefer Nikon for DSLR's but Canon's better for compact cameras. Olympus' waterproof and shockproof features are enticing but the camera is slow and the optics are not of very good quality so you wont be getting extremely sharp photos or amazing colours. In general when looking for a camera look for something that uses SD cards, has a lithium ion battery, a screen that's big enough for you, and IS/VR(image stabilization/vibration reduction). These days you don't even have to worry about mega pixels unless you're gonna be printing huge photos, all the cameras have enough.

They do use an SD type card though, but its probably just a name for them.

The Olympus cameras do have their faults, but its better then taking your chances with a normal camera and they will take a much better photo then a disposable waterproof camera.

I have the SD870 and the SD790 ...love em both... I used to work in camera sales.. the new nikon's are really well built now as well... The sd1000 is a good pocket cam still... Stay away from olympus... they are not built well at all...last year model for the water proof / shock proof cams had major issues with the seals, leaked like crazy.

The A series cams from canon, have some good features but, they run on AA batteries and are a little bulky... get and SD!
