A lot of people consider an M-audio card to be the best for sound quality.

For the money I'd look for an OEM audigy 2.

Follow the instructions it comes with.

basically, shut down PC, turn off/uplug power supply, open your PC, pull your old one out if you have one, put new card in the slot, screw in the screw close case.

Boot, windows will probably find it, install drivers. Enjoy.

Soundblaster audigy cards with the front face plates have optical in and out, and all that stuff you're looking for. Think its around 200-300 bucks tho.

Yeah my buddy uses the one with the front panle on his editing system. He got it cause he's got SPDIF powered studio monitors and a digital mixing board. This way the whole signal stays digital. I want one but he said if you're not running digital powered equipment, it's really not needed, and it's just a cool thing to drool over.

Anyone know what these go for now?

Well the best sound card on the market is probably the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum... but that's probably not the best for the money .. it's around 400USD right now.. I'd probably go sound blaster 5.1 ... you could get that for a good price and is more than what most ppl need

No, no, no! You don't just turn off, unplug, plug in and turn on. The proper way is to first UNINSTALL the current soundcard, THEN shut down, and switch cards. If you don't uninstall first, you may run into problems when you start back up with the new soundcard in it's place.

Then you get errant drivers on your system that don't need to be there. And that's how you get a bogged down system. So in actual fact, your system will run slower.

I dunno about SB they're a bit shady
That's not true. They're the cards that will ALWAYS be supported.

I'd probably go sound blaster 5.1 ... you could get that for a good price and is more than what most ppl need

eg93hb... Aren't you using the SB software that you got with the card? You should be able to set everything up using the software. Make sure that the speakers are set to 4.1 rather than 2 speakers. Also check to see that you DON'T have digital surround checked off in the settings of the Creative software. If you're not using digital setup, your speakers will only output at very low rates. In this case, you most likely are using analog surround sound. You need a digital receiver to get digital sound from your sound card.

I cannot find the software config cd well, the setup cd all i can find is he installation cd and i tried re installing the card, is there a way to enable the sound to 4.1? I did it using the windows xp speaker config but it doesnt do ne thing, the sound is mainly through the 2 fronts and not the rears. The 2 rears have an echoey sound and are not really clear and do not give ne effect at all

anyone know whats wrong? or a program i can use to configure it?
