Teen clocked at 194 km/h latest charged
A 17-year-old clocked at 195 km/h on Hwy. 410 in Brampton last night is the latest in a string of stunt drivers police have encountered since the snow melted and temperatures warmed.
But police say linking speeding and weather is difficult since current weather is not included in their statistics.
The youth was stopped on Wednesday just before 9:30 p.m. driving at almost 100 km/hr over the posted speed limit while southbound on the highway near Queen St. E., Ontario Provincial Police Const. Graham Williamson said.
He was driving a Toyota Avalon, believed to belong to his parents, he said.
Officers detected an odour of alcohol on his breath and charged him with having more than a zero blood alcohol level with a G2 license and consuming liquor under age, as well as stunt driving. He cannot be named under Canada's youth laws.
The suspect was alone and was lucky to not have been injured, Williamson said.
Earlier this week, OPP charged seven other drivers with stunt driving, or street racing.
The suspects were driving at speeds ranging from 155 km/h to 183 km/h. One of the drivers had no license and had two children in the car who were not wearing seatbelts.
The maximum penalty for stunt driving is a $10,000 fine and a six-month license suspension, plus an automatic seven-day license suspension and seizure of the vehicle.
Police define "stunt driving" as exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/hr or more.
"When a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit by that much, it really puts the public and the driver himself at huge risk," he said.
An increased awareness in these weather conditions does not necessarily correspond to an increase in incidences, Williamson said.
"The public and police are more aware of speeding at this time of year," he said.
"It's anecdotal at times to say the sun's shining and we've had a lot of speeders ... but we can't say (for sure) because weather is not part of our statistics taking."

since we're telling people to grow up, maybe we should tell the entire middle east to grow up and lighten up.
we'll have world peace.
sounds pretty easy fo sheezy.
kids do stupid things. they don't listen.
nothing will change that.
except maybe implants into their brains.
