I lose time on the straights, but my car is lighter so it carries more speed through corners, uses less brakes in the braking zones, it's easier on tires and parts are cheap and plentiful. Nope. Honda's are the best bang for buck in terms of go fast performance.

You should see a BMW guy cry when he over-revs. It's painful to see. Have you ever priced out an M3 powerplant? Plus, when I stuff my car into a tire wall like I did last summer, 800 bucks later I have a new shell and all I have to do is move over the parts.

This season I'll have 220hp at the wheel in another CRX and will be up against a LS1 powered 240. I'll let you know how that goes.

Sure, a 16 year old CRX isn't as bling as an M3 or Lexus, but check the laptimes and race budgets between the 2 racers and you'll see why I think I'm better off. But if it's just for old lady cruising around the street, you're right, there are better cars for the money.
well put.
i think i've seen your car before, what does it look like?

right but he can drive that car for 5 years and still sell it for $3000. so any money he puts into it to keep it running is just the cost of ownership, not depreciation.

newer domestics are a great alternative for people who aren't really car guys. they're cheap and parts can be had almost anywhere!!!

as for the 19inch chrome wheels... don't be a homo. you drive a granny car, just accept the blow to your ego and console yourself with the fact you got a fully loaded car.

big chromies don't belong on FWD family cars.

you think he can sell his 2001 Malibu in 5 years for 3 grand? He spent 3540 on it.. we dont even know the kms..
Im not talking parts to repair the thing..

Look at Cavaliers depreciation... not amount spend to fix it..

I do agree that newer domestics are a good alternative, but the resale is horrible on them..

WHY??

Because
-#1 my dad works for Gm.
-The car is much bigger (im 6'4, the malibu has my needed space)
-the malibu was fully loaded ( leathers, moonroof, ps, pw, pd, abs)
-The car is faster than a civic 3.1 v6 170hp

I spent $3540 on the malibu which I thot was a ill deal compared to 3000$ on JDM engine swap for my civic, then another 800$ to add leathers to my interior.

I Still love and miss the civic. But I found my new love.. 2k1 Malibu. yes its a granny car, but it wont be when I throw some 19" chromes on it. Lets see u do that to a civic
^one of my friends is also malibu ricer who thinks his malibu is some sort of speed demon. I would never be caught dead driving that old man/woman car. Enjoy the "leather" before it cracks and all the other power options before they stop working. If you are going to slap on some chrome 19z worth more then your car, you might as well get some chrome edge trim to match the rest of that ricefest you will have going!

hey dude! dont diss the cavalier! those cars are great seeing as i owned a 94 z24. very reliable and good on gas. BUT, i bought my civic because 1. I got a great deal on it. 2. i was looking for a project car that i can slowly work at. I dont regret buying the civic. ya sure, ive got 1000's of dollors into it and its still rusted out and ugly looking ( which will be all fixed up in the spring) but god, it goes like hell. my little 1.5 runs great. it handles great and rides awesome. reason why i put money into my car, because i find it fun to work on my car and its just my passion. theres my 2 cents, good thread

So your Cavalier was good to you, im glad to hear that.. but virtually every other one that ive known personally someone that has owned one.. said it was a POS and would never own one again.

Lets start with my mothers, She bought one brand new in 1991...by 1999, she had to buy a new car (she bought a 95 Corolla). She had only put 110K on this car, and it started burning oil amung other problems (mechcanical and body), hence why she bought a new one. She kept the cavalier as a back up/ for a beater.. by 2003, the frame started to go and the car had to be scrapped.. this car was well taken care if and rust proofed every year.

My buddy had a 1998 Cavalier, it also did not make it past 150k before the engine blew..

The resale on them is not so hot either...you can get a for 5 grand, A 2000 Z24 with around 100k on it.. but my guess is the thing wont last.

If you get one that lasts and is reliable, thats great.. but they are not known to be the best cars around.

I personally own a 2007 2 dr civic, which i just got today, a 1996 2dr coupe, and a 1994 hatch that is totally custom. I think the honda civic is one of the best cars out there today for the money, they are extremely fun to drive, reliable , and in expensive.although i will have to agree with some of the other people, my 94 has costed me quite a bit of money so far (25k) and the motor is still totally stock besides the cold air intake. I will never see half of that money back, kiss it good bye!. its just a very exspensive hobby. just thought i'd let everyone know that the 07 is a blast to drive.

The Honda civic is one of the best cars to start off with no matter what your plans are.

You can: drive it as it is, get great fuel mileage and have a great reliable ride that will last you many years...

OR you can: turn it into a crazy sleeper corvette-eater (which is my preference) or a road course monster or a show-stopper....

Parts are cheap and available. Resale value is better than dumbestics . It's extremely easy to mod...

What else can you say?

You could ask the question, "why do people blow there money on ________?" about almost anything where someone buys a more expensive version of something when a less expensive option exists.

Shoes- either way you get from point A to point B
Cars- either way you get from point A to point B
Clothes- either way you have something to wear
TV's- huge or small you can still watch shows
the list goes on....

To you someone may be blowing money, but to them they are making a purchase where the added utility from having something better than the bare minimum, outweighs the price to have that better version.

Most people don't want just the bare minimum. Sure an investment banker could drive to work in a Kia, but doing so in a Benz is perceived by that person as a better overall experience- i.e. more fun (faster, more features), more respect/prestige, better quality, etc. The same goes for clothes, shoes, etc. people with extra funds are willing to pay extra for what they perceive will be a better product.

The key is that it is PERCEIVED to be better by that person, not necessarily perceived as such by you. This is the reason why someone would "blow" money on a Civic. They perceive it as something to give them more utility. You can't walk up to them and fill out a checklist of objective criteria and compare that to objective criteria of other cars and then say, "No, a ten-year-old M3 would have been better for you to spend this money on." The person did it because that was the combination of upgrades and car that they value. It was reliable, unique, reasonably quick, etc. and they had the funds to acquire/build it.

For some people, cars are not just a form of transportation where the goal is to incur as little maintenance, repairs and depreciation as possible before it is sold. Many people spend money on their cars because that is something that gives them utility.

^^^well said man and very true.

also i wish people wud just lay off the "RICE" comments , that is my most hated word ever and alot of people use it way to much to cut up others perhaps a guy throws 19's on , we can all have a good laugh because to us its a little different but truly he is in the modding of cars scene. maybe the guys style is big chrome things. but again this term RICE is just gettin to be overplayed.

our first family car was a dodge shadow which we had for 6 years with very little problems. We purchased a chevy cavalier as a second car. This cavalier had 45000k on it and within 3 months we spent almost $3000 in repairs. The horn stopped working, the battery kept dying, etc. and for a 2.2L it drank gas and accelerated very slow. We traded that in for a 99 civic sedan. My dad sold the dodge shadow, which was a great car, for a toyota corolla. Me and my sister drove the civic for a year then she bought an integra and i bought a civic si. I'm now selling the civic and moving on to my third import, 98-01 integra.

good mileage
looks good from the get go and cheap to mod to look even nicer
surprisingly cheap on insurance

I liek them also because you can easily customize it, its easy to learn and work with and simple things i can do myself instead of taking it in for a $80 oil change that needs electronic sensors and all sorts of crap. before i got a car i never would have thought i would mod a honda, im a simple guy that likes hands on stuff so after i got it i just started to work on it.

I also hate idiots with cars with bigger engines or high end sports vehicles that rip it and show off and think they are bad ***, seriously imo i think its immature and gay. if you got the power theres no need to boast or flaunt it, loosers do that who need attention. Besides the other 6 cars at the stoplight filled with girls are most likely not going to be impressed with your machoness.

If I had all the money in the world, ya i would get a few top end expensive done up cars but ide have a hell of alot of low end cars that ide be spending most of my time on as well, simply bc i love to work with them and make them into something better than they are, appearance and in performance.
