my buddy owns a 2k2 Gti 1.8T and let me tell you, that thing rips!!! just flooring it in first, and the tires cant hook...

not bad for a car thats pretty much stock....

GIAC makes an X-Chip for the new 1.8Ts, 1.1Bar. Its supposed to be amazing.

yah i've drove the new one and the 1st gear is pretty good on that thing but the top end isnt that impressive. i've had some highway runs with my friend in his GTI and it was pretty close. Never really got to run side-by-side but from what i could tell our cars are pretty even. Pretty much a driver's race. Mind you my SiR isnt stock though.
