Use what your engine needs.
For American models, I would go with the owner's manual. For Japanese, I would just upgrade to the next level. I was using 87 and for this batch of gas, I am using 89, just to see what it can do. But I won't put in 91 or 94.

87 just like Honda recommends. Running a higher octane then your engine needs can be harmful to your engine and othe systems.
Higher octane burns much hotter then regular and when you use a fuel with a higher octane rating than your vehicle requires, this unburned fuel can collect and damage the emission system and catalytic converter.

putting anything more than 87 in a d series is just dumb.
worthless cuz it doesnt give you any sort of gains that are noticable, but it gives you a definate noticable loss of efficiency.
sure it might run a little cleaner, but considering what a d series motor is worth it just isnt worth it to put a higher octane gas in a motor that goes for like 500 bucks

i'm running 11.5:1 compression ratio and i still only ever use 91 octane in my b16. And i am running pretty agressive ignition timing maps.
DOHC VTEC engines require 91 octane due to their higher compression ratios.
All other stock b and d-series only call for 87.
In my honda owners manual for my 95 coupe EX it calls for 86 or higher. I've only seen 86 octane at 1 gas station and that was in the sticks by where i lived in ohio....sunoco i believe.
Unless you have a higher compression or are boosted 91 octane is a waste for a civic IMO.
