too much oil.. how bad is it?

i checked my oil last night, and it seemed pretty low. so i went and got a litre of oil and added about half of it, but when i checked this morning it was above the high marker.

i read in the manual that this can damage the engine, but is half a litre that bad? what kind of damage could happen, and should i do anything, or just try it?

your motor can over heat and the whole motor can seize.

no u dont, just take the drain plug out and drain a little bit of oil and close it back up. a little more is ok but im not sure about 500ml more. lol i've had like 2mm above the line and it was fine.

i'm afraid to do that.. first off i'm in my apt's outdoor parking lot, i have no jacks or draining pan or anything, and plus isn't the washer on the drain plug ruined once you open it up?

i think i will try and drive it to canadian tire for an oil change. it will take less than 5 minutes of operation to get it there.. it's the closest place. grr i am sick of being stupid.

no i reuse my washers a lot depending on the condition on them. i haven't noticed any leaks reusing my washers a few times but if you use the rubber ones those will wear out fast. i would suggest taking it to a pro then since you can't do it by urself. don't be lazy on oil changes! i'm not saying you are but you drive a fairly new car. regular oil changes will make your motor last a life time.

well now i know.. next time i add any oil i will only add 1/8th of the bottle at a time, and checking the oil while the engine is cold is much easier to read. i'm probably being too careful but that's the better way for me to be

i took it to canuck tire for an oil change.. 5w20 formula 1.. it was only almost 1000km from needing it.

thanks for the info, i appreciate it.

If you put in too much oil, the engine’s crankshaft can actually come in contact with the oil and because the crankshaft is turning at several thousand revolutions per minute, it can whip the oil into a froth full of air bubbles. The oil pump can’t pump froth very well, and as a result, it can’t get oil to the parts of the engine that needs lubrication.

I dont' know if this makes you feel better or not, but I had to top up my oil one time and I put a little bit to much and put about a full inch above the max level, but I noticed it right away, and just decided to change my oil (DIY)

got in my parents van, got the oil/oil filter and that's it

having 500 ml too much isnt going to do much.
you will burn it out anyways.

blah ive done the same and put like a full liter above the full mark, so i wuz like ***** it, i drove it, beat the shyt out of it for awile, and my lovely oil burning motor took care of the rest

P.S Honda motors can take a shilacking and a half, so dont worry bout it too much

it's not about siezing the motor it will actully make you blow a seal most likely the crank seal.
