Timing Belt Swap...Info req'd

People have diiferent opinions about that, altough Honda recomends changing it at 100K. When have you got yours changed? Where? How much? Any do's and dont's?

Also, im thinking of doing this myself...so any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx!

K

Don't wait, I'd recommend doing it around 96,000km.

I have to do mine b4 winter as well. I should have done it when I did my swap.

What year Civic do you drive?

Example for a 93 Civic:

Timing belt $45

Water pump $45 rebulit/$72 new

I'd say $300 parts/labour

If you're lucky..

You'll be driving alone and it snaps.. and all you need is a tow to the garage to get it replaced..

If you're unlucky..

You'll be driving alone and it snaps.. and all you need is a tow to the garage to get your MOTOR replaced..

Both situations have happenned to customers of mine...

Now.... Do you feel lucky today?

if the belt snaps you don't need to replace the whole motor, you have to replace the head. I would do it before 100k and doing it on your own is not easy either and if you do one little thing wrong, when you crank your motor over say goodbye to all the valves and you'll have to replace the head.

For the cost of repairing that head would be just as much as a new motor.

Ken I'll give you a call.

Actually, you could have to replace the whole motor. Generally, ppl get lucky, and with low interference engines like ours, it only damages the head, but if you're unlucky, heads of valves can snap off, and drop into the chamber and cause holes in the pistons, and therefore require full rebuilds, I have seen it get even worse where bore are scratched and gouged beyond repair. To the person with 197,000 on their car. Count yourself lucky that you have lasted this long, but like anything else made of rubber, timing belts do meet their end at some point. I just hope you get it changed in time, rather than paying for a repair that could've been avoided.
