I'm sorry, but I have a real hard time believing this story.
Stealing the car is one thing, but bringing it back to where it was stolen from with all of the parts missing seems a little bogus. Why wouldn't the theive's just leave it in a lot somewhere on just some random spot?

i feel sorry for your buddy, but again, like most others, this is kinda funny and weird... i hate thieves, but this one sure deserves some respect for his courage and guts man.... how many thieves can do that? not too much...
many possibilites:
1) the thief is a real professional, planned it all out... tries to source info about your buddy and your buddy's car for quite a while, then took the opportunity... --> giving your car back will give you a hard time reporting this... your car was not lost, just parts were stolen, then you need to prove it to be true and go through crap with your insurance and proving you're not thefting your own car when you talk to the police?? there been stories where people theft own stuff and report them... (of course this is not your buddies case, but cops would take this scenario into consideration too, right?)
2) its someone your buddy knows... that person must be close with your buddy, knows his car well etc etc. it might or might not be his coworkers (someone mentioned this above)
i suggest him to see if any of his friends became weird lately or any of his coworkers seems suspicious... or get an investigator...
3) a closeby shop or some punk that lives in a nearby area (keele+finch?)
i suggest him visit/locate all the autoshop in that area within 10-15km of radius.... visit the shops... talk to them... see if they can have hookups or get you parts for cheap or used parts.... then bring up you're looking for some sparcos... maybe red would be good.... blah blah... if a shop calls you back shortly and say they found such and such you looking for.... and the price seems fishy.... you have found a possible suspect....
good luck and hope your buddy can find that funny thief out...
