Public opinion of high Km driving...

I'm trying to decide what is in my best interest in terms of commuting...to whoever responds: Would you drive your good cond. Civic 160KM/day 5 days a week or get a beater for that..and how signifigant is the body milage despite a high km engine as long as it's repaired?..my whole car is basically mechanically new even though it's a 93..except the engine and tranny..so drive the hell out of it now - replace drivetrain l8er..or save the km's for a beater?..My engine already has 258 000 Km on it now ..so might as well stop worrying eh? ..but say it gets like 500 000 Km on it - would it still be worth a swap? Just wondering what personal opinions I can gather from this...THX!

I drive my civic that much ... I don't really care if the resale value drops because of the high Km's I put on my car .. I plan on being buried in the car when I die....I'm not getting a new car for 10 years or so...

I drive the same amount of KM's. I drive a beater! You should see my car after 2 years of driving it. I treat my cars with respect! But it doesn't matter how well you take care of it, it'll end up looking used and abused! Trust me! I have proof! Cracked windshield, busted headlight and dented hood from flying debris. Sandblasted front end and huge paint chips.

If you're not worried about the body, the motor should last you!

I drive 150 - 200 KM's a day with my Civic...

Its designed to be a commuter car..

No better way to kill your current D-series and step up to a B series...

I am at the 250,000 KM mark and the bloody thing refuses to die...

I've seen Honda's with mileage over 400K on a stock motor. If you take care of your car you shouldn't have any motor problems for a long time. Damn 200 Kilometers a day I drive around 250 kilometers a week and I hate it, how do you guys put up with it, especially driving threw traffic with a standard car

My thoughts exactly. I bought a Civic for its reliability and economy. I push 130+ daily going to and from school, picking up/dropping off gf, going to and from work.

The add-on madness came afterwards , but i still beat it all day!

Cool - now I don't feel as lonely in my high-milage life..Technically I only drive it to school now; 60 km , but come summer it's an 80+km trip..It's so true about the motor..I just maintain it like crazy ..and my cluch has never needed to be replaced either..I just drive with care - not to be confused with driving boring..I just don't jam it into gears & crap like that..and momentum is my friend!

So if it's mostly highway driving, might as well let the motor go out with some grace and not even bother with a beater?..The only thing I'm worried about is the body/stuff and effects of mileage on that - not so much the motor at all.. Does anyone know of any signifigant mileage limitations on the body..besides rust, exhaust and suspension stuff??

Not sure........mileage effects everything differently. Just look after your car and it should be fine.

City/Highway driving.........my chasiss has around 304k on it, I was told the motor was newer when I bought it (guessing it has about 100k on it). Still runs like a champ but I need to fix my rusty quater panels.

But my gauge cluster says 204k

NOTE: I have an Si cluster in my DX.

If it were me I would get a cheap beater because milage just costs money. Ya the car will last as long as you want to keep maintaining it. I get a beater a year drive it for 20k and dump it no money invested. Last summer I got a toyota tercel for 200 and put 20k sold it for 300. No money out. Now I have an 89 accord for 100 and will drive it till next fall or something then sell that for at least whats in it. Now I only use the beater for dirty work, putting parts in it motor delivery and milage. My wife has a 2000 sir with under 50k and had it for three summers. If you want a cheap car I can find you something good for under 500

Every day... WHen I first got the car.. I would do like 25-50 km... Now that I found a lady... and I drive to Ryerson every day... I put upwards of 250 km a day on my car! That's like driving from here to Kingston.

Pure madness! I put 12000 km on my car in just over 2 months.

Well.. like 94EG6HB said.. no better way to break the D series motor and step up to a B series... but in my case.. I'd step up to a K series motor However.. I got lots and lots of mileage left on my car.. I should keep my revs up @ 5000 whenever I'm driving I guess (to break it faster!)

Well, high mileage is know to take it's toll on factory welds...Rust is an issue too, as well as steering components. Bushings will rot away too. And your front end will take a beating for sure from rock salt and sand on the road. Personally, I have a beater, and would have it no other way, but maybe if my Civic was a used purchase, I would look at it differently.

Fairview Acura had a 1992 Integra RS on display as the highest mileage car around... over 700,000 kms. Still ran, and even looked very nice.

my brothers winter beater says 323 000 km's ! Still running amazing. Minus the part in the morning when you have to rev the engine at 4 grand or else it will stall out. That is just the choke, well, the used to be choke untill we took it out. Gotta love the carburator !
