Exclamation PLEASE READ: For the DIY guys out there...

R.I.P

my condolences go to his family..

I've seen a few use un-trustworthy jacks before.. and always disagreed with it.. in fact i've seen a guy using a jack like that last week to change a wheel.. and the car dropped... luckily he wasn't doing any work under the car.

I take beers to my buddy's shop to use his hoist... such a better and safer way to work.

My condolences to his family...

Pretty scary. I work on cars on jack stand all the time. I don't know the specific details of the situation he was in (jack stands, no jack stands, what type of jack was being used...etc) but I NEVER go under the car without it properly supported by at least 2 jack stands. I often try to shake or wiggle the car to make sure it won't move as well.

Very sad story. Definitely opens one's eye's to shop safety.

Opening one's eye doesn't suffice. I'm disgusted with myself after reading this and knowing some of the past work I've done and the lack of brains used to complete it. May he rest in peace. It shouldn't take someone's unfortunate event to teach people a lesson. Everyone has a brain and I don't think I need to say anything further.....

No need to be disgusted with yourself. I've done stupid things that I didn't realize were stupid until after I did them. The important thing is that you were lucky and learned your lesson as a result. Now if you did it again after the fact, that would be different.

RIP to the guy who didn't get off so easy...hopefully many will learn from his mistake.

Sounds like the wheel (that was not jacked off the ground) was not blocked hence allowing the car to roll... That is one of the safety practices I use every time when I lift a car via a jack and jack stands when a hoist is not handy nearby.
