Painting car questions

hey guys i know this question is asked like twice a week but im kinda desperate and i have no time to go around and get quotes (midterm season round 2 )= )

my dad backed into my car and scuffed my paint (btw it was my new car :'(

the cars a 99 civic black

now i know black is the cheapest colour and im not expecting PEARLESCENT FLAKE CANDY METALLIC BLACK i just want a nice paint job (2 base coat and 3 clears) now wheres the best place to get it done for fairly cheap

i know car aid customs is pretty good but im lookin for some other places that would do it a bit cheaper

d16y8 17-Mar-2009 02:03 AM

Paint it yourself, cheapest price out there.

Trybal 17-Mar-2009 02:18 AM

Sue his ass!! j/k

There are so many bodyshops. I'd pull the bumper off and prep it for painting. Take it to anywhere that has a good paint booth (for balanced heat curing). Bring you're own paint, unless, the shop can get it for much less.

spike 17-Mar-2009 02:27 AM

If your looking to just fix were he hit you, then your looking around $500, but if you want the full car painted, when it all depends on how bad the rest of the body/paint is. but if it's not to bad, you should be able to get it around $2000.

That is a good thought. Though the OP is looking for a decent paint job.

Im guessing that it can't be buffed?

No it's a pretty bad scuff

I was quoted 2500 to paint my car ferrari red ( it was red already) fix rust dents and replace window trim and a cracked rocker

My bro in law got quoted 1800 to fix his roof and buy+ install a body and paint his car black ( was black already)

2000 isa bit overboard there's no rust but there are a lot of small scratched and scuffs (previous owner)

I don't want to make a show car but I don't want something that'll wash off

Btw.. Does anyone know anything about the Pickering maaco I heard that maaco was one of the few that were good

Crazydragonclk 17-Mar-2009 08:56 AM

macco is terrible, it is a 50/50 paintjob, could be terrible could be okay, i had a friend who had to sue them due to a bubbling paint job, it took him about 2 or so years to get hsi money from the paint date messup.

To be honest it generally depends on how much you spend, you can pay a little cheaper for a shottier job but you will be complaining later on like me after only 1 year

my advice is to jus buff out those rough areas on the main portion of the car and perhaps spray can the minor areas that are not major panels, ei doors, hood,

For the major bumper issue, get the bumper done professionally, Find out the price for a brand new bumper n repaint as it will often be cheaper then repairing the old plastic bumper, often body shops can get pretty good bumper fitments for 50-80 bucks and then paint supplies is not much on top of it,

T-MacK 17-Mar-2009 09:17 AM

Macco where I live has done some good jobs on a few of my buddies car.
I took my EG there for a scratch repair and they did a great job. My buddy got a $900 paint job from them and his car looks hot. I guess it all depends.

and you live where? (ignore the stalker vibe of that question lol :P)

Trybal 17-Mar-2009 02:13 PM

I believe K-town would be Kitchener/Waterloo

cr8tive_leo 17-Mar-2009 02:41 PM

Newmarket Macco is very good.

Seen many cars doen by them, even had 12 of our fleet trucks done by them, excellent. You do get what you pay for.

bengali548 17-Mar-2009 03:31 PM

has anyone had any experience with the pickering maaco?

I'm wondering if I should pain it myself because I can get more creative

I doubt this.. But can I paint outside lol I have no space in the garage

CiViCRaCeR 17-Mar-2009 05:46 PM

Dude go into a badyshop and show them the damage, tell them you want a "blow in" done, they basically paint half the bumper and blowing it in from one side to the other, there will be a blend mark, they will remove it for you so you don't see any marks. only problem is that if you have lots of stone chips half the bumper will be chipped and the other half will look like new. it costs roughly $200+tax. Trust me I work at a dealer bodyshop.
check it out.

Stay away from places like Maaco...geez, it Maaco...the name should turn you away immediately!

rick10 17-Mar-2009 06:00 PM

i heard some good and bad stories about maaco. I only seen 3 cars painted there and to be honest the paint look hot. However i have read stories in which people say they suck. I think it all depends on the location and the people doing it.

My buddy actually went to maaco and he pay the painter (not maaco but one of their workers) like 100 bucks under the table to do a good job , plus whatever maaco was chargin him. Since he got pay the hour he took the 100 bucks and did an excellent job.

bengali548 22-Mar-2009 08:59 AM

I got 500 from maaco and 900 from another place as quoted

But I just though of this now.. How much extra would the charge for flake paint
( all the needto do is mix flakes into the clear coat and spray with constant pressure)

OR could I do this at home after they do the paint job or will dust stick to the clear coat also?

spike 22-Mar-2009 10:49 AM

never go to macco, the paint will flake off in 6 month, thats why they are so cheep. Flake is more money. i would say you wold be looking at like 100-200 more. And no it's not something you can do in your driveway at home. When it comes to body work and paint, you get what you pay for. I don't mind paying that little more, to get the perfect body and paint job.

bengali548 22-Mar-2009 11:08 AM

Ya I'm going to do a bit more research into this but ya flakes would deffinitely add a nice hint of rice to my car LOL :p

bengali548 22-Mar-2009 11:53 AM

when i say black do places assume flat black or satin black?

i wanted a metallic black is that extra?

i assume metallic is just 2 base with 3 clear coats right?

spike 22-Mar-2009 12:07 PM

metallic has a speckle to it, it does cost more then just plain gloss black paint job.

bengali548 22-Mar-2009 01:02 PM

ahh ic shouldnt be too much more maybe like 300 bucks but ya

Trybal 22-Mar-2009 01:07 PM

Black with high amounts of Metallic Blue spec or some other Metallic would give it a little extra.

bengali548 22-Mar-2009 01:13 PM

little extra what?

i was actually going for red flakes and hopefully have them sprayed at a high pressure so it disperses evenly.

looks nice on some ricer cars so i thought id steal :P and make it mroe cleaner looking

It's more money to paint flake, because most guys use a different paint gun for painting it, as you are spraying little metal flakes through the paint gun, plus if you take to a good shop they will know how to paint it. Plus when you paint a car, you don't paint using high air pressure, you have your air pressure low.

even for clear coat?

spike 22-Mar-2009 01:27 PM

The higher the air pressure the faster the paint comes out, and the easyer it is for the paint to run, plus clear coat is not as thick as the paint. When you see a paint job just done, and there's a run, that run is in the clear coat, not the paint.

ahh kk gotcha i always thought that the lower the pressure the worse

btw can anyone point me to a good paint shop (other than the ones stated) that would paint my car and do the flake paint also (preferrably in the scarborough-pickering region)

btw money isnt a big issue but im not ballin out of control

Trybal 22-Mar-2009 01:31 PM

Some ideas.

Flakes

Kustom Shop - Buy Warehouse Direct at Wholesale Pricing

spike 22-Mar-2009 01:40 PM

I only go to one place and that's because they the some of the best body/paint jobs out there, as they paint every thing from civic's, ferrari's, maserati, all the high end cars.

and that place is...

how about prices

i know car aid custom guy did the car for optionjdm.com's owner so he's legit his prices are fair but again i think he does 2 much like im not asking for a paintjob where someone with a magnifying glass and a nose for finding mistakes will have a hard time but i want a paint job that looks good from afar and close up (something that'll look good in pictures lol)

Trybal 22-Mar-2009 01:57 PM

I'd also like know the name of this place.

Most likely around $2000-$2500, depending on what kind of paint job you want, and how much work they will need to do to get the car body perfect and how much prep work is involved.

spike 22-Mar-2009 02:08 PM

Plus if it you want a really good prep job done on the car i can give you a name for you to ask for him to be the person doing the prep work on the car.

you can get a little can or bottle of mini silver flake for $80 +tax only need a cap full and the car is buried in flake, other than that you will have a ton left.

do it yourself man.
