Modding Cars, Juvenille?
Hey,
jsut wondering what you guys think about this..but do you think that modfying a car is a juvenile thing that onnly young teenagers ( 16-18) do when they get their first car? they just blow their money away? or is it an art, and hobbie that can be shared by ALL AGES - even if started in mid 20's?
B/c - i have friends saying that modding a car is for young kids, and that all of us should be saving our money for houses and to buy NEW car.....
wat you guys think???

Modding cars is like buying other materialistic items, like DVD, clothing, watches, shoes, gadgets, cell phones, jewlery - anything that is disposible and not life dependent.
As long as you take care your primary tasks in life, spending money on other things doesn't really matter all that much. I do spend some money on my car, but not all of it.

Depends on the person, yes buying a house is better in a financial standpoint and im starting to feel that way But i see guys in there 50's that have a house and nothing better to do so they start building hot rods. I will always have the love to mod cars but right now its not the best thing for me to be dumping money into so im spending money on school then a house then the car will be the last thing.

I am sure that there are plenty of people on here in their 20's, me included. I don't see how 16-18 year olds have that kind of money to mod their cars. I didn't start really modding my car until i was like 20 when i had a decent paying full time job and could afford it. I mean, where would a highschool aged kid get 10 grand to spend modding their car?
My car is reflection of myself thats for sure.....looks plain and simple on the outside, but once you get inside you realize what its really like....just like me.

modding is no way juvenile, if that was the case any form of hobby could be juvenille...
computer overclocking, stamp collecting, cds, dvds, you name it.
If you enjoy the hobby and don't go overboard and have to eat mr noodles 7 days a week so you can buy that body kit for your car, you need some help, but other than that its fair game..
as for the new car statement, if your talking NEW NEW, like right from a dealer, IMO biggest waste, sure you get warrenties etc, but its better to buy a slightly used newer car, since they depreciate so much once they roll off the lot.
As for cynicals comment about civic = entry level...to who?
If your comparing it to a BMW M3...whats the diff?
..there both made of metal
...both have engines
...both have interiors
...both run on the ground with tires..
I guess the only diff would be speed and how luxuorious it is, but dump that money into a civic and their the same, no? If you can get a civic to handle better than a m3 and be faster, would you call the m3 entry level?

I think cynikal is trying to say what i believe aswell. This is that if ur seriously into cars and are passionate about personalizing them owning a civic is like the starting point and u gradually get into more expensive cars. Like u start with a civic, then im planning on getting a truck, then like a muscle car, hot rod, low-rider etc. Low-rider IMO is the ultimate next to owning a 1 off custom ride from like chip foose.

what I'm sayin is...u mod a civic and all...in the end its still an economy car and have no status...like you pull up to royal york valet in a civic no matter how much money you put in it its still a civic...so like when u move on up to a bigger/better car lets use the M3 for example u already have the cake and everything is just icing...the status is there regardless
as for myself I'm planning on moving onto a 300C in the near future...it looks alot better getting out of that in a suit than rolling out of a civic...also for clientele when u go to see your clients in a higher class vehicle they will think higher of you...its like dressing nice, its an extension of who you are and what you are...in the end its what you want to do...I know I dont wanna be in a civic or other sport compact car because its not who I am anymore but everybody is different
fack, I still wanna have a 2nd gen crx si...thats the car that has eluded me since I've had hondas...but that would be solely a 2nd car kinda thing

It's a shame that if my parents go out to dinner at a nice restaurant and they take my moms civic, they will be looked down upon, but if they went in my dad's durrango all of a sudden they get royal service.
I don't follow this example though, ive seen enough turds driving high price autos who I wouldn't give the time of day, and people driving beat up chevettes who are the greatest people ever.
If I ever win the lottery I'm gonna mod a civic to the **** and drive around everywhere and be proud, F this world.

you don't grow out of being a gearhead. I've chilled with 50-60 year old guys who still build hot rods from the 1920s and isht. you are either a gearhead, or you're a **** following a trend.
sorry to all the ***** out there, but that's the truth ~ on the bright side, thanks for being there... you drive the economy of the sport cuz you go out there and buy overpriced parts and then have a shop install them.

Excellent points from everyone.
After I sold my last car I said ****, im getting too old for this ****, to buy another one. Im in my 20's. I dress in a suit to work everyday and I agree that stepping out of a 15 year old civic does reflect your personality and your identity as a whole (people will automatically think your some punk *** kid), when they know jack **** about you.
It's just the way the world runs. Not much you can do about it but follow... which I don't agree on.
I said to myself that I would never buy a civic again, and look at me now, I got another one 2 years newer than my old car.
The car is going to have an almost stock appearance, but it's still a civic.
No matter what you do to it, the car will never have any class.
Doesen't bother me though b/c I couldn't give 2 ****s what anyone thinks
