Import Specialist EK Track Car build thread...

Hey Guys;

So thought I’d start this thread to keep you guys up on the Import Specialist EK we’re building this year to compete in the 2009 Solo Sprint and HADA Time Attack series. It’s Dale Csekey’s car but my race partner MartinG and myself (MilesM) will be campaigning it this season. This is the build thread. Right now there's no driveline and is presently getting a cage and body work done.

Many of you know Dale Csekey as the founder and original owner or RT Motorsports. After he sold that, he went south to form RT Miami performance shop. He ran for a couple years and is now back where he belongs in Canada. His new shop is called Import Specialists and this car is his first Canadian track ready promotional vehicle.

Dale@importspecialist.ca - 519 368 1000

Body/Exterior:

2000 Honda Civic hatchback, DX model, Vintage Plum Pearl colour. Some of you know this as Charles' old car.

Name:  P1010620.jpg
Views: 1181
Size:  58.2 KB

This is what the body looked like before Raj at Discovery Auto Collision (Welcome to Discovery Auto Collision Inc.) got his hands on it. Plans are fender flares and a full refresh the paint.

Also in the works is a vinyl wrap from Shinzo Media Werks in a Japanese Anime robot action theme. Shinzo Media - Shinzo Werks 905-472-7188

- Cams being sourced through John Lo at OptionJDM – 416 297 5788 - Likely a Buddy Club Stage 5.
- HASPort 88A engine mounts (new, hardest offered by HASport);
- JIMFab front urethane torque mounts (new, gold mounts with red bushings);
- Morroso 6 gate road race oil pan that carries an extra litre of oil (on order)

Cooling:

- Koyo dual core full size radiator, black;
- Samco radiator hoses, purple
- Distilled water 75% and 25% Honda Coolant

Fuel:

- Earl’s fuel line;

Suspension:

- Spoon 5 way adjustable coilover, F16K, R14K at present, but we have 10K and 12K springs that we will be fine-tuning with. At present plans are to run higher rates in the front than the rear – but that might all change once we get the car on the track with the tires on it.
- SRR rear LCA
- Energy Suspension bushings at – rear trailing arms, front upper &lower control arms (new)
- USDM SiR front lower control arm with 26mm sway bar;
- CTR 22mm rear sway bar (new);
- ASR brace plate (32mm sway bar race version);
- Spoon zero bump steer kit - Roll Centre Adjuster - a taller front lower ball joint – idea is to keep the LCA straight on a lowered car.
- Spoon front strut bar. May come off during track tuning.
- Alignment - likely start with 3 degrees front camber, 2 degrees rear. We check front tire temps so camber will be adjusted by track, but will likely start with 3 degrees and 2. 1/16th toe out front each side for a total of 1/8 front toe out, 0 toe rear.
- Hard Race solid bushing Upper Control Arms – Kiwi at Special Projects Special Projects Motorsports
- Hard Race solid bushing rear toe adjusters – Kiwi at Special Projects Special Projects Motorsports

Cage:
This cage is a bit of a nightmare.

It’s a decent cage for a lapping car. Light weight. But lots of room for improvement. The seat belt harness bar is too high, plus other issues like being anchored to the rear floor instead of on plates to the shock towers. That X needs to be straightened out too. Originally Ronnie O’Brien was commissioned to take on the rebuild but his schedule and ours didn’t line up. So, the job went to Webber Chassis in Guelf – Affiliated with RPM Motorsports ( RPM Fine Autos - Rotary motors - Car chassis - Performance parts ) Garth is the guy to ask for: 519 513 0350. Seems really knowledgeable and has been incredible to deal with. Can’t wait to see the work. Pictures of the new cage will be added since it’s presently being installed. Webber is also creating a custom rear wing mount to sit the wing as far back on the chassis as possible.

Intake & Exhaust:
- HKS air filter;
- ARC intake chamber;
- JDM Fujitsubo 2.5” inlet muffler (custom cut exit lip);
- Header info to come.

* Hawk DT60 pads through Perry Performance and Competition
* Motul RBF600 sourced through Perry Performance and Comptetion
* ITR brake booster;
* ITR brake master cylinder;

Wheel and tire:

- Fronts: 15X8 Rotas sourced from Pete Mills at Marcor – 1 800 263 8621
- Rears: 15X7 Team Dynamics also from Pete Mills at Marcor
- Wet tires – full tread R888s grooved by Jeff Wenzel at Tire Craft Concord – 905 760 1130
- Wet tires will run 28lbs of air cold.
- Dry fronts Goodyear Eagle Slick R430 – 23X9X15 – equivalent to a 245/40/15 - Jeff Wenzel at Tire Craft Concord – 905 760 1130
- Dry rears – Good year Eagle Slick R430 – 23X8X15 – equivalent to a 225/45/15 - Jeff Wenzel at Tire Craft Concord – 905 760 1130
- Dry tires will run 22lbs of air cold.
- To fit these tires – the fenders were flared out by Raj at Discovery Auto Collision discover-auto-collision.com 519 780 2099

Aero:

- P1 Ground effects front splitter from Special Projects Motorsport Special Projects Motorsports (contact Jeff ‘Kiwi’ Owen - kiwi@specialprojectsms.com)
- APC rear CF wing with custom fabbed anchors through the rear hatch – made by Garth at Webber Chassis (519 513 0350). Will sit about a foot and a half behind the rear window and follow the roofline and made from aluminum.
- Buddy Club carbon fiber vented hood. I put this in aero because we plan to direct the air that comes out of the rad and direct it through the hood – (John at Optionjdm.com 416 297 5788)
- R-Crew aluminum front carnards – not sure if these will help much, but going to try back to back testing to see what happens
- Might try a flat bottom and a rear diffuser later in the season.

Interior:

- Momo carbon fiber race bucket seat;
- New belts through Jeff Brown at JRP – 905 822 RACE (on order)
- JDM Works Bell steering wheel adaptor
- JDM Splash thin quick release;
- 60mm steering wheel extension;

Bling bits:

- SiR front grille;
- SiR front lip;
- SiR front bumper;
- Spoon mirrors
- C-West carbon fiber race mirror, custom door mount method.

Data Logging:

- G2X Pro sourced from Jeff Brown at *********.com - monitors oil temps, oil pressure, water temp and creates a GPS map of your runs, lines and lap times so you can see what adjustments actually save time and what ones don't.

Track tuning:

- Only guessing on how the car will handle at this point. Have no experience with these tires or how this new aero will affect performance. Proper data logging is key. Just cuz something feels fast doesn’t make it fast.

Cool stuff!

Keep us posted on the development.

I'm especially interested to see what the suspension setup will be after it's dialed in on the track. 16K front and 14K rear...that's ridiculously stiff.

Some tracks like the stiffer springs some don't. Mosport for sure rewards a stiff suspension. TMP and SMP are somewhere in the middle. Ste Estache and Dunnville you want something much softer - even an aggressive street setup.

Here's the new wing anchoring system we bought and what it looks like installed on the another car that is also installing it. The system works anchors through the hatch door and onto the floor of the vehicle. The advantage being the downforce is generated from clean air, and force is applied further back making it far more effective than a roof mounted system.

Here's an update on the cage. All work done by Garth at Webber Chassis - 519-404-9722 - Webber Chassis. He's been awesome to deal with so far and has gone above and beyond the call of duty picking up the vehicle and adjusting to changes. A few unforeseen set backs came up but he was true to his word and is delivering the car on time and on budget. He's also the guy who sorted out and installed the wing mount. Finished pictures to come.

The old cage anchored to the floor so here's it being cut out and filled in. Not the ideal place to be anchored.

Plates being mounted. CASC-OR requires all cages be mounted to plates. Drastically improve the safety of the cage with very little extra weight added.

Here's the new crossbar.

New seatbelt anchor. All the x'ing still needs to be done and pictures of that should be coming tonight probably.

Awsome stuff!

Love the wing brackets!

16k front and 14k rear sounds about right after rethinking about it, you must be using a decent sized rear bar then...

I don't think the CTR rear sway is big enough. Should prolly go to a 32mm. Going to try the 16Ks but have the feeling we're going to softer springs. I don't like skipping across bumps on the track.

NICE BUILD!!!
finally something respectable here....
Charles would be very happy to see his car turn into this beast.

I remember the motor mounts he had, they used to shake the frame like crazy.

The driver's side engine mount is going back to stock. This is a weak spot in the Honda design. A B20B revving to 7ishK a solid mount is fine, but a high revving race motor on race spring has a tendency to crack the engine mount on the engine side. The mount and the bolts stay in place, it's just a chunk of aluminum rips off the block. It's an aluminum block so I've seen it break before on other cars.The other mounts are fine, just the driver's side one I'd caution everyone to leave stock.

Cage is done and looks awesome. Pictures to come. The strut tower braces have been re-enforced and anchored to the floor and side door bars have also been anchored and re-enforced to the floor. The wing mount has been installed. Incredible piece and a great value at $900 installed. Amazing amount of work craftsmanship on that piece. All work courtesy of Garth Webb at Webber chassis. Webber Chassis

The car is now in at discovery for 3" fender flares and a paint re-fresh. Interior is going to be a flat dark gunmetal gray.

Webber Chassis dropped the car off to Raj at Discovery Auto Collision for paint and body work. They've been incredible to deal with and very professional. Some of their other builds are incredible. They've got a late 60's Camero tube frame road race chassis in there that's just mind boggling. The Compass 360 race cars are in there now getting work done as well.

Side bars are now anchored to the cage.

The Xing is also anchored to the floor and the shock tower brace.

Camera mount was also installed for the filming of race car ****.

The wing mount is also completed. The wing now sits out as far as possible in clean air and applies the down force as far back as possible.

miles017.jpg?t=1242227706

The roof mounted wing will be removed by the way and there will only be the one wing so don't rib me on running a double decker spoiler.

miles020.jpg?t=1242227813

Here's how the wing is anchored to the trunk. There's steel piping that goes through the trunk and connects to an anchoring system behind the door.

miles014.jpg?t=1242228299

Here's the anchoring system behind the door. It connects to the chassis on either side of the door. The plates in the center keep the door from carrying the entire load from the wing.

miles028.jpg?t=1242228190

And.. check this out... the trunk still opens.
