Engine blown :-(

For those who haven't heard...I have a new paperweight...a big one.

Yesterday on my way home from work my engine died. A week ago I was hearing sounds from it...a rattling sound...I thought it was something rattling...it was actually the connecting rod bearing, yesterday is when the bearing gave in...the engine stalled on the 401....i started it again but it wouldnt idle...it just shut off...I started it again and revved it to about 3000rpms and somehow made it down the 400 to weston road where Altech Performance was...they lookED at it...started it...and gave me the bad news...the connecting rod bearing went and while I was looking at it it made a loud crunch sound...i guess the rod/piston broke off the connecting rod and damaged the block?

Anyways...let this be a lesson to all...don't redline too much...check your oil weekly...and keep your air filter clean...you never know....like me, I never saw this coming...not for a Honda engine with only 160,000kms on it.

I really love cars and Hondas...so Im gonna start saving for a swap...if I needed the car just to get from point a to point b I'd swap in another SOHC...but thats not the case...I want performance...maybe not RIGHT now...but I will down the road, and a swap would be the best bet.

Soon Ill be stipping the car and selling everything...when I get the new engine Im going to redo everything and do it ALL PROPERLY....no shortcuts

Im feeling alot better today...I spent most of yester crying the anguish out of my system...heh...ah well...worse things happen to other people...this isnt the end of the world for me

Looks like lots of bread and water for the next 3 months

hm.... since both of u have experienced such tragic deaths to the D16Y8....
can you guys give advices to those of us who sports the D16Y8? what to avoid or what to listen to and to stop driving it if such thing/problem is detected ???

Thanks...

I know u already said to avoid redlining too much and listen to rattling .... but my cat or heatshield is always rattling....
and mine is auto (ya... I know that sucks)... but I still redline it
oh.... my engine had 140000+km on it... how do I check if it's in healthy condition? it sounds ok to me... valves have been adjusted 6mths ago.... but still have those tapping sound... but my friends are telling me that it's normal... but it's been too long since I have this car and I can't remember how it sounded when new

For me my heatsheilds were loose. The rattling sound was exactly the same as the heatsheild. So when my heatsheild came off I thought that there was another peice loose and never had it looked at.

yeah it's the same sound as the heat shield ... I blew up my engine the day after I got it learning stick in a car that was never maintained...

anyways as for the current engine ... it sees red every race (solo2) and sometimes bounces off the limiter for a good 5 to 10 seconds at a time because it's quicker to just bounce it then try to upshift hit the gas then down shift for the next turn....

for the dailying driving it hits red only in first and possibly second ....and only when I need to get by someone ... sometimes sees the red in third, on the highway to get by someone that can't drive .... personally I'm not to worried when it dies I swap in a b series or something with torque...

coz I hear that rattling even when I'm driving normally....

First off have your heatsheilds checked. If the noise goes away your fine. If not contact Leitner or Altech or RT.

NOTHING is wrong with redlining.......just make sure your air filter is always clean (so no **** gets in your engine), and oil...makes sure theres always enough and its clean. For me though i didnt check the oil very often.

Yup I think those are the two main things (air filter and oil)... makes sense too...keep the internal parts of your engine clean and it should last.

Ill probably get a swap...which one depends on money...a b18c1 gsr would be nice.

i have been there twice, first time was the ZC. it was the best, went out in a blaze of glory! piston went right through the block, smoke everywhere, huge bang. second was the D16 went quietly and unexpected. both sad, and ended with the same swap, i mean the exact same engine to be precise. alls well that end well i guess

Jeff,

You forgot to mention you had your "Check Engine Light" on. I warned you about a VTEC code and I am sure that has something to do with it. You had a VTEC switch (which is controlled by oil) malfunction code. My guess was there was an oil passage blocked somewhere causing the code, oil starvation and eventual death of your engine. I did warn you to get it checked out at a dealer. Mind you, it might have been on purpose (good excuse for a swap).

So, one more piece of advice, if your "Check Engine Light" comes on, get it checked out....

Mark

O that isn't fun Sean!!! Man, and you just got the car recently too!!!

Cripes, I'm at 160km nearly... but I have a Y7... lol, so no VTEC issues, and my oil is changed like every 5 weeks.

Hope the next engine is better!

It should be noted that bearing failure is a lack of lubrication due to maintenance. After my synth oil is 3-4K kms old, I don't rev it out until the oil is changed again. Mobil 1 and Honda filters every time since 10K kms on it. The only way this engine will go is if I lean out a cylinder in a fit of boobetry, and the piston decides to go through the block, the the rods bend and shatter...
